would having two SATA and two PATA drives decrease performance due to the two types of drive?
 
I don't think so. Plenty of systems have both types of drives (i.e. a WD Raptor SATA running as the windows drive, and a 160gb PATA Maxtor for storage - or something like that) and this is certainly considered normal. Hell when I upgrade, I'm not throwing away my oodles of PATA drives :p
