SATA not recognized in XP

I'm running a P4 on an Asus P4S8X mobo with 2 HDDs on the primary IDE in windows xp pro. One of them is old and is starting to click, so I wanted to get a new SATA drive and recover the data. I just want it as an extra storage device, so I bought a Maxtor SATA 160GB 7200 rpm 8mb cache HDD. I installed the mobo SCSI drivers in windows, and the drive is recognized as SCSI Disk Drive in Device Manager under Disk Drives, but it isn't recognized anywhere else in windows, or in computer management.

I have no clue what to do, please help.
 
Not sure if I can understand but I believe you'd need to set a partition on it before it can show up.

1) Windows setup
2) FDisk

Yeah, put in your XP disk, create a partition on the SATA drive, and format it. From there you can either install windows on the new drive, which I would recommend since your old drive seems to be dying, or boot into windows on the IDE drive and copy stuff over. Problem with doing that is you will lose the stuff if you ever want to install windows on the SATA drive because partitions are formatted prior to installing windows.

So what you want to do is install windows on the new drive, boot on the new drive, and copy from the old drive. I do a windows install on every hard drive in my system so I have maximum capability to recover data in the event I screw something up with my OS install. Also it means I don't have to shuffle files around if I want to boot from a different hard drive for any reason.
 
No need to reboot. Start -> Control Panel -> Administrative tools -> computer management -> disk management. make partitions & reformat.
 
I was hoping I wouldn't need a new windows install since I "lost" my xp disk. Unfortunately, it is recognized in device manager but not computer management.
