sata newbie needs help

Hi all I just signed up most of you seem intelligent and I hope someone could help me out. I built a all new parts system but am having trouble booting up with my raptor drive. here are the specs before I devulge more info on the problem.

amd athlon64 s754 3400+ clawhammer
dfi lanparty ut 3 250gb (black light reactive ooh ahh big whoop)
chaintech fx5500 256mb video card
1gig (dual channel but not in dual mode cuz of s754) patriot ram cas 2.5-3-3-8 1T <<<whatever that means
36 gig WD raptor drive
cd-rw rom and 500watt psu
stock cooling, video card cooler, 12cm hard drive fan, three exhaust fans plus two with psu (5) = plenty of airflow

ok
1. in system tray hdd is being detected as a removable device
2. after installing service pak 2 it did not shut down (you know how your suppossed to restart for changes to take effect)
3. now it doesn't boot at all

This is first time using sata and I did enable udma in the bios, they way things are going I can't help but think it has something to do with the mobo or maybe there's something I'm not aware of on sata. I put in my old ide WD 13gig 2mb cache hdd and installed xp everything works just fine not a hitch. I hope I supplied enough info I would greatly appriciate the help. what goes around comes around.

SATA drives are meant to be hotswappable. My Raptor is listed as a removable device as well - I believe this is normal.

When you say it won't boot, what exactly happens? Does it go through the BIOS and hang going into XP or something? Can you try pressing F8 to boot XP into safe mode? I'm going on what you said about problems with SP2 causing this, which would imply a problem with XP at the worst. If you can get into Windows via safe mode, you can try a system restore (start/programs/accessories/system tools/system restore) to a date before SP2 (I think Windows automatically creates a save point before it upgrades). If this works, you'll probably have to try installing SP2 again to get it over and done with.
 
Yes, SATA drives are meant to be removable. There have been a couple of quirky computers that have come into the shop when SP2 is installed. I think that your best bet is to get an XP disk that has SP2 already on it, or try to streamline your existing disk.

When I installed SP2 it asks you to restart your computer; I did... but the thing didn't even shut down, I had to press 'the power button of doom'. I then powered up and got to the screen where it asks if you would like to go to safe mode, last known config, etc. I did press safe mode and it runs a list of cmds. or something but then just hangs, doesn't do anything. I tried again and again using the different choices just to make sure. but nothing it doesn't boot into windows (yes it hangs going into windows). What I did was gather a old ata66 WD 13gig ide and hooked it up installed xp everything just fine no hitch then simply plugged in sata drive its reading fine as a back up E:\ drive. I tried in bios to switch boot priority back to the raptor, but alas still same thing won't boot into windows. the 13gig I have in here was never meant too, its nice that I can get the raptor as a back storage but I NEED it to be a main drive and take the 13gig out.
Any suggestions, it seems to work as a back up for just stoarage but thats not what it was meant to do. Should I simply format and re-install windows along with sp2? oh by slip steam is it meant that you somehow make a xp disc that includes sp2? I have it written down somewhere how to make a xp disc but I'm not sure on how I would include sp2.

Well since it is a fresh installation of windows and have nothing to loose I would suggest that you just format and install again.
 
As above - if it's a fresh install, maybe just go through the whole install again. As an alternative, if you boot with the XP Install disk in the drive, it will offer you an option to repair the current installation (something sounds corrupted). I have never used it, but have heard it has its uses. In your situation, maybe not as a fresh install would probably be just as quick.

As for slipstreaming, Google for the instructions as there's a few bits and pieces to do in order to set it up - I think you can include all sorts of handy options with the XP install disk. I had a look at the instructions myself and couldn't be bothered to put in the effort. Instead, I just downloaded the full 270Mb SP2 download for developers and I have it on a spare drive should I need it again.

I have tried the re-install that was my first crack at it but the same result. I will try again however and post the results.
After doing a oc and looking a little bit more at my bios I'm fairly certain there's just something I don't have installed or dont have set correctly. I was talking with a friend of mine and he mentioned sata drivers
I told him that the sata drivers should be already included in xp or even my mobo cd.

If I had known sata would have been such a headache I would have just gotten a WD .8 caviar series ide drive :/

so am I getting a pretty unaimous advice from everyone that I should re-install windows and just simply give it another try?
 
XP should have no problem talking to a SATA drive. It's when you want to set up SATA RAID that you need to install some drivers.
