Hiya. Well, I recently purchased a Seagate SATA harddrive, but I'm having trouble trying to install XP on it. In fact, I have no idea what I'm doing. My mobo is an ASUS A7V600-X. I decided that my WD 120GB IDE harddrive wasn't doing the trick anymore and so I decided to give SATA a try. I bought it OEM and so there's absolutely no manuals or anything to help me get started. I plugged it in a gave it power. I enabled it in BIOS and set my 1st boot device as my CD-ROM so as to install XP on my SATA. It finishes up loading all them files and then its like, no drive is present or something to the extent that it doesn't recognize the SATA. I figure I better look into the setup of the SATA right after POST finishes. I get into that, but it tells me I need TWO SATA drives. Ya right! :eek: I look in my mobo manual and it keeps saying stuff about RAID and SATA and how they are together or something like that. I have no experience with RAID in the past, so that doesn't help out. Do I need to buy another SATA drive in order to install XP on it? Do I have to setup my SATA as a RAID and all that crap? Can I have both my SATA and IDE drives installed at the same time with my 1st boot device being the SATA drive and just use the IDE as extra space and stuff? Do I need to download some BIOS like files and install them so as to enable my SATA drive? As you can tell, I really have no idea what I'm doing. I've been researching for a few days now and am running low on ideas. Thanks so much for tolerating this huge thread. Thanks for any input from anybody.

Some basics when installing on SATA -

1. Your optical drive (CD, DVD) should be on the secondary IDE channel.

2. Unplug any other drives from the primary IDE channel. Plug them in after the OS is up and running on the SATA.

3. Sounds like your motherboard may require you to load drivers via floppy for Windows. Do this by watching for "Press F6 if you have SCSI or RAID drivers to load" at the bottom of the screen as Windows starts to load initially off the CD-ROM. It will continue to load files and eventually ask you to insert a floppy disk. The drivers can be gotten from the mobo manuf's website or usually on the mobo driver CD-ROM in a subdirectory.

Could you explain this to me, either here, or in a PM? This is the first I've heard of it.

Not necessary, but very good advice. It prevents you from accidently installing XP on an IDE drive.
