the iea is great. i could rack up hdd's in a spare case with a dedicated power supply and fans and use 2 or 3 of these to have them dirrectly connected to my main pc!

but that is WAYY to much money. is there something similair cheaper? as all it its is some connectors lol and its a lot of cash.

i like the idea though
 
This is nice, but you need a controller that supports port multipliers. Yes, it's $400, but that gets you a convenient package and a single cable interface. And that includes power supply, case, port multiplier, and hotswap bays.

You could build a similar thing with an $80 port multi, an esata cable, a back port thing, and whatever case and power supply you have. But it's not a lot cheaper in the long run, and it doesn't do simple hotswap.
