In my BIOS, I can change the modes of the SATA disks to one of IDE, RAID or AHCI.
I understand IDE to be a basic compatibility mode. It does not require special drivers and does not provide special features.
RAID is, inexplicably, RAID. You need special drivers to use it, but you can setup different RAID sets - usually, 0 and 1 but sometimes 0, 1, 5 and 10.
AHCI is new to me. As far as I know, it's like IDE, but allows special SATA features such as Native Command Queuing to be used. Again, it requires special operating system drivers.
Is this correct?
Assuming that it is (and, even if it isn't) here's a question: AHCI enables the special SATA features (such as NCQ) - does that mean that the features are NOT used in, say IDE mode? What about RAID mode?
I'm confused, please help.
