I'm a newb, so bear with me. I could google it, but I prefer the responses through [H]. What is "SATA II" (3.0 gb/s)? I have a choice between 2 drives. Same price, but one is SATA II, and the other is "regular". The new mobo is an Epox NForce3 Ultra.
 
No joy for you at present, as far as SATA-II Goes. NV did not introduce SATA-II Support until NF4. However, if the drives are the same price and otherwise equal, I'd get the SATA-II Drive, is it is backwards compatible, will perform the same, and will be ready to use NCQ, hot plug, and 3 gbps transfer when you get a SATA-II Ready mobo next time around.
 
No NF4 board available w/o pci-e, correct? Is there a considerable difference between SI and S2?
 
Raw performance in most desktop tasks? The interface makes almost no difference. There will be less than 5% performance difference going from Ultra ATA 66 to SATA-II 300, it's just not that big of a deal. You'll be fine with an SATA-I mobo, and if you already have a top flight AGP card such as 6800GT/X800 Pro or above, then you should stick with AGP until it is time to upgrade your vid card, then move to the entirely new platform then.

Also, all NF4 boards are PCI-E.
