Hey Everyone.. Its been a while since I've posted, I've been under the loom of the mighty penguin, and trying to get that slippery bastard optimized.. friggin *nix. Anyway, in my sheer desperation to get my sata II drive working properly, (It would only detect as a sata I drive), I reinstalled Win XP to get the jist of things. It was then that it dawned on me, Is thier a special cable to support SATA II?? I used the cable that came with my MSI K8N Neo4 Plat SLI. Has that been the problem? The Hitachi 80GB sata II drive I purchased was oem and didn't come with any cables.

Any insight is apprecaited...

hitachi ships the drive at 1.5g sata 1. you have to use the "feature tool" to enable 3.0g sata2.
feature tool v1.98 is near bottom:
http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/download.htm
make bootable cd or floppy - program auto opens on boot.

here's a link discussing how to use the tool and what settings you need:
http://www.hardcoreware.net/reviews/review-283-1.htm

what to do:
1.change sata settings
- click up to 3.0gb/s and disable spread spectrum clocking
2.acoustic management is off by default but check it is offf.
3.idle is off by default but check it is off.

there ya go.

zoinks thanks :) I actually ended up stumbling upon that last night and was able to put it in sata II mode. Didn't upgrade my speed much..
