this is a general question and i am not sure if it pertains to the hard drive or my mother board but, i recently installed a Raptor in my rig (specs in sig and running WinXP) and i am wondering if it is normal for an icon to be present in my system tray. ever since i put the Raptor in, i have had this icon in my system tray that relates to the hdd. it's the same icon you get when you connect a flash drive or mp3 player or any other removable usb device. that being the case, doesn't that icon relate to temporary devices? when i mouse over it, is says "safely remove hardware" and then when i click on it, it shows the Raptor. last time i checked, my internal hdd was a permanent device, lol. why is my computer thinking it is temporary? is it normal for this icon to show up all the time with a sata device?

Well, I dont run SATA myself. But I'd assume that, since SATA is hot-swapable, Windows would give it a Safley Remove Hardware entry normally, wouldent it?

Seems logical.

SATA is hot swappable with many controllers but most don't give the safely remove hardware option in Windows. I think it is a feature on some nforce boards.

Unfortunately I think it also allows the system drive to be "safely removed" though - which obviously isn't "safe".

Well, SRH shouldent let your OS drive be "safley removed" ever, since SRH wont release a device when it's being accessed.

so everything is ok with my system then? this isn't unheard of, it seems?

i have a sata in winxp, i got the icon when i first updated drivers, but after reboot it was gone.

No, it is common, provided you install a SATA drive that supports hot-swap. You could hide the icon if you really care about it.

thanks for all the info. since it's no big deal i'm just gonna leave it alone. i was just curious about it since i don't know much about sata, but i'm learning. :)

sata controller drivers.

if the drive is working there is no reason to update them.

there probably is a way to remove the icon. but you should probably run some speed tests and the like on the drive to make user it is running in the proper modes.
