I have two 80gig 7200 sata drives setup for backup & storage. Whenever I use a file such as MP3 ect I here it firing up and lags...I dont remember it doing this before..What is going on?

Did you disable the default 20 minute drive spin down in windows?

If that is not the problem please run CrystalDiskInfo and post a screen shot if the drive shows any status other than good.

I just did a regular format thru windows..I didnt change any settings. Where can I check if that setting is disabled? I ran and installed crystal disk and it says caution....? There is a yellow circle under ID 05 Reallocated sectors count

Assuming you are on an NT6 based system:
Start -> Control Panel -> Power Options
then "change plan settings" -> "change advanced power settings"
expand the options for 'Hard Disk' -> 'Turn off hard disk after'
change the setting to what you want.

OR
from a command line:
powercfg -change -disk-timeout-ac 120

This would set the timeout for disc spindown to 120 minutes, i think if you change it to zero it will never spin down except on system sleep and shutdown

Aside from possible failures elsewhere, the last time that something like that happened to me, it turned out to be a faulty SATA cable!

What would cause the disks to turn yellow in crystal disk info? Not sure how to get to power options..I dont see that. Im on windows 7

Crystal disk info usually shows which parameters cause the degraded state. If you post a screenshot here we might be able to identify the culprit.

There are 42 bad sectors that have been replaced sometime in the past by the drive.

If the "Reallocated Sectors" 42 (2A) number starts to grow over a short time period this is a sign that the drive is about to die.

There also were 24 times when there was a communication problem between the SATA port and the dive where the packet had to be retransmitted. This could be caused by a loose connector, bad sata cable, bad sata port, pulling out the SATA cable of the drive when it is transmitting ...

Both drives have the same yellow marking. What troubleshooting can I do to figure out what might be the exact issue? Hoping its the drive or sata cable & not the motherboard sata port...These drives are really old. They were actually in my old computer setup during Hurricane Katrina in 2006 lol all that moisture & heat could have messed them up...

Well, those drives are really old. 46000 hours, that are more than 5 years of operation AND 2300 powerups. Thats quite a lot. It may be the time to let them rest in peace and buy some new drives. I have drives that have less than half the operational hours and like 30 powerups and they start to develop bad sectors.

omniscence-what would you recommend for backup drive? I liked having two seperate 80gig drives that were mirrored in case one fails. Looking for something cheap. BTW I have an SSD 120gig and games these days are huge..Is the difference between having games on the SSD vs a regular 7200 sata drive noticeable?
