SATA drive in Win XP - new install

I just installed a WD Raptor 74GB SATA hd in my system. I'm having trouble getting my motherboard recognize the new drive. During boot the option to get into the RAID manager program pops up before the regular boot process. After that everything's normal. There's nothing about SATA drives in the BIOS and when I disconnect the existing drive and try to boot up with only the new SATA drive and the Win XP CD I get part way through the boot process until it hangs after it says "Verifying DMI Pool Data..........." It tried to install Win XP once but I didn't have the SATA drivers ready so I had to abort when it couldn't find any drives installed. Any ideas?

Some chipsets have native SATA support, some dont. You probably need to hit F6 when booting and insert a floppy with your SATA drivers on it and you should be good to go. If you have access to another PC, you can always make a slipstream version of XP with the drivers on it - do a search as theres lots of help on that subject on the forum. :)

Also get out your manual and verify that your BIOS is configured correctly for one drive.

it'd help if you told us what board you have, and which controller you're using (if it has more than 1)

however, 99.9% sure it's because you arn't loading your SATA driver for XP setup. Check your mobo box and see if they included a floppy. If not, you can use a working system to either download it, or it should also have an image on the CD that you can extract.

I'm using an ASUS A7N8X Deluxe mobo. I should have mentioned that first.

Summoner - I'm not able to get to the part where it asks for me to hit F6 to load my own drivers. The boot process hangs after it shows the PCI bus IRQs and it is "Verifying DMI Pool Data........." At this point it just gives me a blinking cursor on the bottom of the screen and does nothing. It's as if it's stopped reading the CD drive. I've double checked the BIOS and I can't find anything that's not enabled that would affect the CD and I don't think I've changed anything since it was able to read the CD.

djnes - according to the documentation, SATA drives have priority over IDE devices and don't require any changes to the BIOS. As soon as I unplug my old drive, the BIOS shows no drives installed. In fact the BIOS never shows the SATA drive at all.

potroast - I'm using the mobo's onboard SATA controller which is a Silicon Image 3112 SATA controller. I have the drivers on floppy but I can't get far enough into the boot process to use them.

Edited post :

Hit F6 is on the XP CD when it boots from it. You need to set your bios to boot from CD rom first, HD second, put XP CD in and let it boot from that. Once it starts loading you will see the F6 prompt and thats when you put in the floppy with the drivers. Once XP has the drivers, the install will continue, and when it needs to reboot it will find your HD and install.

it is freezing because the failed windows install wrote to the MBR, and the BIOS is hanging there. Going into BIOS and giving the CDROM higher priority than the HDD will get you back into setup.

be ready to hit F6 as soon as the screen goes blue -- it comes up fast.

Summoner, you beat me to the punch! I just figured it out! As you said, I changed the boot order and made the CD first. I got Win XP to load, now I have to reload all my drivers and settings and the two service packs.

How do I tell the computer that my IDE drive will be a slave? I set the jumper on the drive to slave and plugged in the slave cable connector but it still boots up as primary. Should I change the boot order again in the BIOS and leave HDD0 out of it?

As it is now, the SATA drive is showing up as F:\

Im not sure on your board, but on mine theres a bios option to choose boot HD priority (IDE, SATA or other controllers).

I figured it out... In case you want to know for future reference, I had to change one of the boot options in the BIOS to boot from a SCSI device. I also removed the HDD0 boot option just for good measure.

Thanks everyone for your help!
