I got a 250gb Maxtor Maxline Plus II OEM from Newegg, and I'll be damned if I can get this computer to detect it in windows. It's plugged into a regular SATA port, not a RAID port. When I start the computer up, on one of the black screens it shows that it's detected, 233gb, model number etc. When I get into windows nothing shows in the My Computer! Help!!
 
is it formatted and partitioned? see if Windows detects it in Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Computer Management - Disk Management. If its in there, just partition it by right clicking.

Anyhow, thats usually the case with IDE drives not under "My Computers", so I'm not sure about SATA disks.
 
If the drive isn't showing up under disk management there is a deeper issue there like drivers or power, or the drive being bad.


This info really needs to be put in the stickies for this forum. This question comes up about once every 3 days or more..

Yes, it is the same with any new drive being added to a system. Not just sata or ide. even scsi will do this.
 
The drive can't be bad, since it is being detected in the startup process. The drivers might be the only problem, but I installed the ones from my mobo cd. Also it's being powered correctly, that's a fact.
 
i know this might sound stupid to suggest, but make sure you only plug in either the SATA power cable or the Molex cable, not both at the same time.. I dont know if it can still be detected if you did this, but its worth a look. Ummm, since its not in Disk Management, there's a problem. So, see if theres bios or SATA controller driver updates?

Try using the Promise controller, then go into the bios, disable the other SATA Controlller, then set the Promise one from RAID to IDE Operation. Hope that works
