I am looking into building a SFF media server. I am going to get this SATA Rack so I can swapp drives in and out as they start filling (I plan on archiving all my DVD over 500 :eek:!). Now the thing that confuses me is the SATA controller card. Are the RAID cards the only ones that support hot swapping SATA? Are there motherboards that support hot swapping? Any help and links to products that one would recommend is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
 
Why do you need hot swapping? The only benefit would be in you were concerned with uptime. If you had a drive failure and wanted to replace the drive without having to bring the system down. In the event of a drive failure, is it really that much of a hassle to shut down your media PC and reboot it?

Some cards may or may not support it and not all RAID cards do either. SATA II is not a spec set in stone, but rather a series of specs. Any drive with any or all of these speccs is listed as "SATA II", so you'll want to check the individual HBA or RAID card to know for sure.
 
Well I want hotswapping so when one drive gets full I can take it out and pop another one in and start archiving on a new drive. Then when I want to watch something I dont have turn off my pc to pop in the hd that has the movies/tv shows I wish to watch. I know if this is a server I should probably be looking at a regular case but I want to try something new.
 
You could just buy a cheap SAS HBA. They all support hot swap. I've used the LSI SAS HBA with the 4port external infiniband connection and the hot swap has worked like a charm.
 
nforce4 chipsets support it, as long as you install the nvidia driver. You get the 'removable hardware' icon near your clock and can stop the drive and pull it.

Just make sure you're using a sata power connector and not the molex one. One of them is designed to be removed easily and without damaging the drive, the other one isn't.
