SATA Card Recomendations

Hi all:

I currently have a SuperMicro SASLP-MV8 in my system that is giving me some issues. System is an i5 2400, 8gb ram, 64 bit 2008r2, 4 2tb seagates in raid 5. I keep getting intermittent disk errors and eventually get a blue screen about once every other day. I'm troubleshooting with tech support, but bottom line is I'm looking for recomendations on a low cost Sata controller card that will definitely work seamlessly in my setup. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

What model 2TB drives are those Seagates? If they are the LP models, that could be part of your issue. Though I have never had it cause a blue screen.

I switched over to an Areca 1880i and I have an array of the LP drives as my back-up array, and it works flawlessly. But, its not exactly a low cost option. It will however be waaaaay faster than your current software-type solution.

I am using model LP ST32000542AS with the latest firmware. I've read that several people have had success with the drives in a RAID configuration so I have to think its a card issue. The Areca sounds nice, but is a bit out of my price range. I was hoping to stay <$500 for 4 2TB drives and the controller card. The Seagate drives were ~$80 each and the SM card was ~$110. I will the performance of the software RAID with my i5 2400 quad core isn't too shabby. I've been getting sustained transfer rates of ~60-70MB/s so I'm not complaining about speed, only stability :)

I'm sure its possible its just an issue with the controller, but I had random time-outs and drop-outs with those exact drives using another RAID controller. The HighPoint cards are a little less expensive, though I can't say they will work any better with those drives. The big problem with those drives is the power management features.

For the same price range, the 2TB green Hitachi drives are a much better bet for RAID from what I've heard, but hey...you already have the Seagates (I was in the same boat).

With only 4 drives, is there a reason you can't use the onboard RAID 5 features of your Intel Matrix RAID? The write performance will be awful, but read performance will be quite speedy. I had 6 of those drives in a Matrix RAID array with no issues.

Someone else might be able to chime in on the blue screens. That is definitely the concerning part of it all. I have never used one of those MV8's.

Thanks for the input Phoenix. I RMA'd the card and put in a new one last night using the latest 4.xx driver. So far I've had a single error "The driver dectected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk8\DR8" but otherwise no other errors or bluescreens. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that things will stay stable...
