SATA Backplane Question

This may be a stupid question but... Do you have to use a RAID setup when you use a backplane? Basically I love how they look, but I dont really want to use RAID.
 
Nope. You'd need a controller that supports as many ports as the backplane, though, and some backplanes use Infiniband connections. Those are awesome, but definitely overkill. Stick to copper-based systems.

danke for the quick reply. Some of the descriptions made it sound like they were made to use raid only. I dont really NEED one, but man they look awesome. :D

Hmm... but Infiniband cables are copper-based...
 
Wow, learn something new every day. I looked up the spec. Quite amazing at how many levels the protocol has to be defined.

Oh, and I found a typo in the spec :p Page 108 or 1677: "The lowest bit rate of 2.5 Gb/sec is referred to as a 1x (times one) link. Other link rates are 10Gb/sec (4x) and 30 Gb/sec (1x2)." Should be 12x, of course.
