SATA Backplane Differences?

I'm looking at maybe going SATA Raid5/6 with a SATA Backplane for hot swapping in case of a drive failure, but I'm not sure if there are some quality differences between the backplanes or whether it matters. Is a backplane just a backplane? Is there much of a difference between say the 4 in 3 $100ish Athena/Ipower/Supermicro whatever modules and the $200ish Promise ones? If I go this route it'd probably be hooked up to a Areca 1220.
 
There isn't any performance difference, if that's what you're after. The build quality is night and day between the cheap and expensive ones, though. I haven't tried Promise. I've handled the Supermicro ones, they seem OK.

I'm currently using several of the Athena units (these are actually rebadges). They work fine, my only complaint is with the stock 80mm fan. The stock fan is loud and moves little air. I modded them to take Panaflo fans, which involved some cutting and drilling. From what I can tell, all of the backplane units use poor fans, though. The Athena's fit and finish is fairly good, the drive trays slide in and out without hangups and the latches work fine. The drive connectors have never misaligned with the backplane, either, which is more than I can say for the Ipower backplane I tried out.

Be forewarned that the backplane units require deep drive bays, and require some clearance beyond their dimensions for adequate airflow and cable routing.
