sata and sata II

I know this has probably been asked but the search didn't turn up anything. I have a tyan K8W S2875 and I was looking into getting a sata drive. My board says it supports the Sata 1.0 specification only. But that is not really a huge benefit. I was wondering if I got an SATA II drive would it work on the board anyways. I know I might not get the speed increase but I would it still function at the peak my board would let it?
 
I can't say for sure, but I wouldn't worry about, things like this are usually backwards compaitable.

Yes they have been out for a while now and they are backwards compatible with boards that only support the original SATA spec. You have to enable the drive to run SATAII even on boards that support SATAII.

And how does one enable a drive to run SATAII? Is there a jumper setting I don't know about? I ask because I just picked up my first ATA-150 drives this very evening.

The SATA II drives (referring to 3.0gb/s speed part of the SATA II extensions) have been enabled by default on all the SATA II drives I have used. In fact, I don't remember any method to disable the higher speed operation. My guess is that if any changes need to be made, it would be on the controller itself. SATA II drives should be able to negotiate automatically to the highest common supported rate between the drive and the controller.
