Just about to upgrade my main hard disc drive to a SATA.

Can I use my old UDMA drive as a back up drive on the same system and would there be any issues? This will also mean I can transfer all old files staright onto the new dsic without making loads of DVD backups.

My motherboard has both on it but doesn't actually state anywhere in the manual whether you can use both at once. (Gigabyte k8N Ultra)

Will I notice a decent speed increase after the upgrade ?

Sorry guys "Newbie" standard of question, but don't want to look a total fool after the event !!!!!!

Yes you can use both in same system. Do the initial install with only the SATA installed. Then add the IDE drive. I suggest reformatting the ide drive as well as it has an OS on it I assume.

Not much of a speed increase unless you get raptors or a higher rpm drive.

Ask questions, we have all been there.

Thanks for this sounded obvious but as I said was actually not stated anywhere in the manual.

The main reason for doing it is because I have a lot of data/music files on the IDE and I wanted to transfer them onto the new SATA without having to put them on DVD first.

Anyway thanks for the advice . I will give it a try and and report back what happens !

Good luck. Ask if you run into any problems. Remember that with Windows you usually have to install the SATA drivers off a floppy during the setup.
