I picked one of these up from Fry's for my new build just a few weeks ago for $90 without any rebates, and I've noticed it seems very loud while seeking, especially compared to my two old 7200.8's. Aren't these drives known for low noise? Should I be concerned or try to get an exchange? Did I just get unlucky?

The 400GB and 500GB 7200.10 Seagate drives are noticable louder at seeking than the 320MB or 750MB varieties. If the noise bothers you try a exchange, but odds are it will sound exactly the same.

my 320Gb is a bit noisy at seek as well.

I wish I had gotten a Samsung Spinpoint T instead. :D

it's fine, just ends up being the loudest thing in the case by a long shot. thats what speakers are for though, right? :D

i did some disk research last week (ended up with a 500 gb samsung spinpoint T166), and i did read somewhere that the 7200.10 can be loud, but oddly enough, only some drives are, and some are quiet

and yeah, i do think my samsung is pretty quiet, no real excessive seeking noise or anything

but then again, the spinpoint lives right under two Maxtor drives and behind a 120 mm fan, so it would have to get pretty damn noisy to get noticed, putting my ear up there though, made me realise how loud one of my old maxtors is when seeking

Noise is relative to the person hearing it. To me a raptor is not loud, but moderate and a 7200.10 is silent.

I think you are okay, have you looked into any sound dampening or hard drive isolation solutions?
