my HD is dead, i need another one, ASAP. I have to write my letter to Santa FAST and u know that that fat bastard only works one day a year, damn that´s life! otherwise he´ll just get me a coal!
So I was wondering if it´s possible to connect a SATA-2 HD in a SATA-1 Controller, would it work at all? would it explode in mid-air or would the SATA2 drive work like a SATA-1 (150 mb/s)?

it would most definatly work. but at SATA 1 speeds.

Seconded. In real world performance there is not a significant differance in speeds anyway.

It should be noted that some early SATA controllers have a hard autonegotiating speed and may need to set the drive to run and 1.5Gb.

which some drives allow you to do via a jumper.

It should generally work, but there are sometimes problems, e.g. with Maxtor SATA II drives in some nForce3 boards. (Jumpering and new firmware from Maxtor didn't help.)

and the hitachi drives via a booteable CD, but all hitachi comes as SATA1.5Gbps ;)

Insert obligatory "How many [H]Forum members does it take to replace a light bulb joke" here.

I have an interesting question. My Western Digital 80 gig drives are having issues. I have an Epox motherboard:

EPoX 4BDA2+ i845D P4 Socket 478 Motherboard

What do I have to watch out for when buying replacement parts like Hard Drives etc? This board was really popular here on Hardforums a number of years ago, but I haven't kept up since then.

I'm not sure what SATA 1 and Sata 2 are etc. Could someone explain that?

when buying a HD for your old mobo you have to make sure that the new HD is supported by your Mobo. SATA or Serial ATA (Advanced Technology Attachment) is the next generation drive interface, following the traditional Parallel ATA (PATA). the cable of SATA drives is little in comparison to the PATA cable the FLAT cable. The PATA went to 133Mb/s in a maximal burst while the SATA-1 has 150Mb/s and the new SATA-2 has double that amount. You might have to flash your mobo bios in order for some new hardware to work

Let's be aware that SATA-IO (the 'official' name for SATA-2) actually does not require 3Gbps signalling, but rather encompasses a whole suite of advanced features that may or may not be supported, including port multipliers, native command queuing and others.

I have the older ATA up tp 133Mb/s, so apparently I'll need to mention this when I bring my machine into the shop today.
