I currently use a 300GB Maxtor SATA150 HD for my O.S. and programs.

I'm going to be buying another 300GB SATA HD for documents etc and I notice that I might as well buy the more abundent SATA 30Gb/s HD's...

should I clone my OS drive to this new 'faster' drive and use that as my OS drive and then use my standard SATA for docs drive?

is it worth the effort? will there be performance gained?

There will be a performance gain,

Sata 1.5 limits bandwidth while the pc is turned on while using sata 3 you will increase that :)

Heh... I got a kick out of that :p

Anyway I doubt you will see any increase at all so go for the lazy mans route and just use the new drive for the storage :)

you haven't a clue what you're talking about

OP, there isn't a drive on the market that can sustain over 150 MB/s transfer rate so SATA 150 isn't limiting you at all

that said, you should always have your OS on the fastest drive, what are the model numbers of the two drives?

the current one that the OS is on is a Maxtor 6B300S0
basically a 300GB SATA 16mb cache (diamondmax 10)

the one i'm looking to get is labeled as:
Maxtor MaXLine III 7V300F0 300GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive

so do you think it would be worth moving the OS to the newer drive?

no

.....

I concur with EnderW.

BUT! It isn't hard to migrate the data over to the new drive if you choose. The drive manufacturers have great disk cloning software that works if you want to clone to the same size hard drive or larger. Those software just don't do so well if your going from a larger drive to a smaller one, but Norton Ghost which is not free does that well if it is able to fit onto the smaller drive.
