And if the controller is SATA1 and the drive SATA3, make sure you jumper the drive so it will operate properly.

That shouldn't be necessary except in very specific cases. The SATA protocol will automatically negotiate to the highest commonly supported speed between the two devices. (of course, there are bugs out there in some chips that cause problems with this and that's why the jumper exists on some drives)

So you would think... I, personally, have experienced issues caused by not jumpering down drives at home and also at work it is now standard procedure to jumper down SATA2 drives on SATA150 controllers for customers systems.
