SAS Channels - Disk Qantities

How important is it to equally distribute your disk between SAS channels off your raid card? LSI recommends each channel have the same number of disk.

Some devices have back planes that support 20 drives on one channel then 12 on the other. With a 2 port raid card, if you are creating 1 or 2 raid sets with all of the disk, in theory the one with 20 drives would be slower. Has anyone actually tested this?
