I just installed the new SAPPHIRE 100280-4GSR Radeon HD 5970 (Hemlock) 4GB 512 (256 x 2)-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 VC. The card from newegg came with modern warfare 2 and dirt 2. I'm currently running 2.4 quad core i7 and believe it or not its not much better then the card I pulled from my pc.. payed over a grand for alot of bells and whistles. lesson learned..pretty sad to be disappointed with the newest and most expensive VC I could buy.

If you're not gaming at 2560x1600 or in eyefinity with that card then yea, you wasted some money. That thing is overpriced to begin with, 2X 5870 2GB would have been a better purchase.

Dont get me wrong its nice but its not much nicer then the card you mentioned. I made a impulse buy.. And now after the fact I realize how stupidly overpriced that card was..

nice a card. its made for eyefinity. if you don't then its just a really expensive 5970

+1 for your rambling

Im running dual Sony 48" LED tv/monitors
both at 1920x1080. anything higher and I can barely see any text.

It's a good video card but appears to be overpriced for what you get. I'd say it should have retailed at $799. Because basically you're just paying for an extra 2GB of VRAM compared to the regular 5970 2GB model.

What was your old card? Also, you need to oc that processor to 4ghz and you can get a Corsair H50 to do that nice and coolie. In my experience, the best gaming experience at this time is one graphics card. Ditch the 5970 and just get one 5870 2gb.

quick offtopic question, how does a single 5970 run in a i5 system does it run at x16 or x8/x8?

should run x16 (depending on your board)....if i remember, the p55 platform can do x16 or x8/x8...

whoa whoa whoa, your using a 5970 4GB?!?! to run 1920x1080??? I'm sorry, but unless you pickup an aidditonal Monitor/TV and go 5760x1080 you are just throwing money out the window on that card. That card is made SPECIFICALLY for high res setups. Only then does it justify the 4GB (2x2GB) buffer built on those cards.

My advice, either get a 3rd screen and go eyefinity or sell/return the card and go with either a 5970 2gb, 5870 1gb, or 480GTX.

+1 on OC'ing your i7 (which i7 runs at 2.4GHz?)

Are you running your game at 1920x1080 or 3840x1080 or windowed in 1920x1080? Most games run really crappy or are not accelerated at all if your not in full screen.

What game are you using to compare your old vs new GPU to?

In general if your only playing at 1920x1080 you would be better off with a 5850 or 5870. Most games today don't really push your GPU technology at lower resolutions (there is a reason why AMD did Eyefinity). By the time a game really needs the power of a 5970 at 1920x1080 you can throw away the 5850/5870 and put in a faster GPU and you will most likely pay a fraction of what your paying for the 5970 today. Going with a 5850/5870 always allows you the option of Xfiring them with a second card later.

Get a third sony 48" LED, to push your configuration to the limit. Your wife will probably call you crazy. But dual 48s is already pretty crazy, so why not add a third one? LOL. Also OC your cpu to at least 3.6. 4.0 would be even better.

And if you run into an increasing rare game that uses only one GPU, that 5970 would be only half used. After all, the 5970 is actually two 5870 GPUs mounted onto a single board.

How do you even use the card on two monitors?
The middle of the game will be obscured by the bezels between the screens.

You need to crank up the resolution on one, or use three.

Also your CPU is weak at 2.4 (what i7 is 2.4?, the 920 is 2.6) you need the horses to push that card.

What did you replace?

IIRC there has never been an i7 desktop CPU that slow. In fact, the slowest i7 CPU manufactured has been the Socket 1156 i7-860S, which is clocked at 2.53GHz.

+1 to everything here; good advice. I'd either spend more while I was at it to do Eyefinity, which that card was MADE for, or cut your losses and sell/return it for a lesser card that will be more suited/appropriate for your current setup.

And yeah, overclock that CPU!

In fact you are wrong and right there is no desktop i7 under 2.5GHz, but my board supports running a Intel Core i7 Quad-core I7-720QM 1.6GHz Mobile Processor OverClocked at 2.4GHz. I'm about to do a cpu upgrade.. still cant decide which one I want. any ideas?

What MB do you have?
I think the best bang for the buck is a 920, should easily OC to 4 GHZ and beyond on the proper board.

I wasn't even aware there were desktop mobos that supported the mobile i7. Sounds like a horrible idea regardless.

I didn't even know that there was an i7 mobile cpu. Weird... In any case, yeah get a proper desktop processor. 920 or 930 offers pretty good bang for the buck if you OC it to proper levels. 980X is the top dog though if you want a hexacore cpu.

I actually own my own refurbish computer supply store were I come across rare and unusable mobos and cpu's. 1 offs sometime and rare items that most consider junk. Ive been completing a server based internet cafe/game hosting rental shop. Ive made alot of progress this is just one of my side projects trying to use newer and older pc components to work together. So far Ive completed will be one of the best pc's ever built since Ive been donated $130,000 over past few months. Im sure to have one of the largest pc,s ubermassive cube based 24 racked 300gb raptors each raid crazy/I'm losing it. basically at a stand still ive exasperated every idea I can and Im asking for help.
money doesn't matter what system would you build and had only 1 month to complete?
I NEED YOUR HELP!!!!!!
