Sapphire X1950XTX - fan issues

I've been using my new card for about a week now. I was playing a game for a good half an hour, and I got an ATI warning message saying my graphics card temperature was getting too high and that it was lowering the speed to compensate.

I took off the side of my case when back in Windows, only to discover that my GPU fan was not spinning, which is obviously a problem.

My question: is this a setting I've missed somewhere; i.e. the fan will only spin when needed and stop when idle? Or is there something wrong with my card? And if there is, are there other avenues I can take in regards to video card cooling? I hope I won't be required to send it back/replace it.

Please let me know if I haven't given enough info and I will post again, thanks.

I don't have a lot of experience with the stock cooler as I replaced it right after testing the card to see if it worked. What I can tell you though is that the fan was always spinning. However this was with windows running the card, I didn't install the ATi drivers until after my waterblock was on so I can't comment on the fan speed modulation. Sorry and hope this helps a bit.

I had the same problem, I ended up installing ATITool and set up a profile for the fan speed based on gpu temp.

I think there may be a problem with the fan. I know the fan spins pretty slow on that when in 2D, and others have commented how hot it requires the card to get before the fan spins up to higher RPMs, but there should never be a time, short of the computer being off, where the fan is not spinning at least slowly.

When you first switch on your pc, do you get the initial ramp up sound of the fan on the card? I know the X1900's do this, I'd imagine the the X1950 would do the same.

Run ATITool and mess with the fan setting to see if you can get the fan to spin. I would stay away from games and long periods of use until you get that fan spinning.

Thanks for the advice all. I've installed ATITool and had a play around with it, and since it was installed I haven't had any further instances of the fan powering down. But, I'm keeping a close eye on the situation.

I do yeah, every time.

My biggest concern is this: when I first built this system, I was troubleshooting a problem where I was getting no video, and it turned out the problem was with the motherboard. However, during that troubleshooting phase, the fan on the gfx card would sometimes spin, and other times not. I thought at the time that it was the motherboard itself just being faulty, but now looking back it seems like there may have been gfx fan issues from the very beginning.

Maybe I should just install a 3rd party cooling system and be done with it, just to be on the safe side.

Are you unable to rma the card?

I've checked, and they said I can exchange it within two weeks. It might be a good idea to do that, just to be safe, it can't hurt. I might monitor it for another week and see how things go, I've got time to spare after all.

I also had the problem, I was running Oblivion when I suddenly got a black out.
Me being paranoid, I ran Oblivion again and shut it down after a few minutes of play,
and checked the ATI overclock tool, the card was at 83 °C so that can't be good. Then I noticed that there wasnt coming much sound from the fan. I decided not to trust the drivers, and installed ATItools now my temps never ever go over 60°, and rarely over 55 °C and it runs at about 44-48 °C on idle.

GET ATI TRAY TOOLS NOW. :)
