Sapphire x1950xt help!

So I got a brandy new Sapphire X1950XT 512mb from Newegg, and I upgraded my PSU to a Corsair HX620w, however it seems to be acting as it had before. When i set it to its stock clocks of 625 and 1600, it will freeze and VPU reset after loading either a video or a game. I've had to back the clocks quite a bit and I'm wondering whats going on. I have the latest ATi drivers, no catalyst control centre, and ATi Tray tools for controlling clocks.

Comp is as listed in my sig with 2 optical drives.
 
These cards run at two differnt speed zones. One is for general computing and turns the clocks down...you can verify the speed with the atitool icon. When you play a game, it ramps up the speed to match the application. So maybe changing the clocks at specific times would be more stable?
 
Thats under the AI overclocking, and by default i usually disable it. I only use one clock speed group for em all.
 
Wow. Sorry to hear that you're still having problems. :( Alright, I have a few suggestions you can try:

1. It may be memory issues. Try running Memtest and see what happens. Check out this link and download the Ultimate Boot CD:

Burn it and run the disc when you restart your system. If there are errors in Memtest, this means one or both of your sticks are going bad. Take one stick out and run Memtest one stick at a time to see if this is true.

2. It might be a software issue. You could try to format and try running your games and videos once you've reinstalled the most basic software to get you up and running. Just out of curiosity though, you wouldn't happen to have the Klite Codec Pack or similar installed would you? I only ask since you mentioned you have problems with videos too. If so, that might be the source of your problems.

Also, if you haven't performed a clean installation of the drivers already (using Driver Cleaner Pro on top of the ATI uninstallation program) then that should be done too.

3. If your games and videos are on the same hard drive, maybe the hard drive is going. Run SMART or similar fitness tests.

4. Try reseating the video card itself.

5. If it's dusty inside, try blowing all the dust out and running with the side panel off.

6. Try running your card in a different computer and see if any of the issues come up. It's a million to one shot that you get another bad card (assuming the first one was actually bad) but it eliminates another possibility.

7. The only other piece of hardware that I can think of that would affect your video card directly would be the motherboard. But that is a real stretch and would be the absolute last thing to test.

That's all I can think of for now. Hopefully your problem is just something that can easily be remedied. Good luck to you again!
 
Well, im positive its not ram just for the fact that its not the computer crashing, its the vpu resetting. Its essentially as though the is just clocked too high, and im hoping its only software related, cause i will gladly reinstall windows and all. But im positive its not the gpu or the mobo. Hardware wise everything in my comp is running AOK.
 
I say do the format and see what comes of it then. Just install all your basic drivers and then install some games to see if you still get those errors. If so, it may very well be hardware, or something that you installed (for instance, something like the AMD Dual Core Optimizer, which gave me problems).

Yeah..im pretty sure its software. I just realized that if a tooltip comes up from me pausing the mouse over something, and the game is windowed (guildwars, which always ran fine windowed even /w tooltips) the game lags severely, almost as though the refresh rate has dropped to like...2
 
Sounds like drivers. Uninstall them through the Add/Remove control panel. Then restart into safe mode and use Driver Cleaner Pro to get rid of all ATI drivers. Then restart and reinstall the latest drivers. Hopefully afterwards you should be ok. :)
 
It's an ATITray Tools problem.

When the clocks change, it also changes the voltages. However, if for whatever reason (i.e. Tray Tools), the voltages aren't being changed, the GPU will crash when any load is put on it (because it's unstable as hell without the volts behind it).

Try using ATiTool, it lets you set the voltages for each profile.

I know from experience because this exact thing happens to me if ATiTool fails to load the new voltages.
 
covertash: Downloading that as we speak. Now when I reinstall, should I install the ones from ATi, from Sapphire (on cd) or Omega drivers? Cause at this point I'm leaning towards omega sans the tray tool.

djBon2112: I'll definitely be trying this first, and if it still doesnt work ill be doing the driver cleaning.
 
Ok, so I'm pretty sure it was the tray tool and drivers. The saying "hindsight is always 20/20", yeah, well I set the overclocking on the tray tools to driver level, figuring that it would be more stable. I'm almost positive it overwrote the drivers with its own shit and didn't revert them to the default. So now the only question is, do i use Omega drivers, Sapphire drivers(on cd), or ATi drivers?
 
EUREKA! So the omega drivers were still causing it to crash and act silly, so I installed the WDM and Display Drivers only, with the ATITool, and no more crashes! It still reads my old clock speeds as default so I think tray tool may have altered them on the card, but thats ok (I had them close to 625/800 anyways). Still have that problem with super low refresh rates when tooltips come up cause I pause the mouse over something, but I can live with it (unless you guys have another amazing suggestion).

EDIT: Also, hardware manager is saying that I have an Uknown device on my gpu that isn't installed. Any ideas?
 
Did you follow the steps using Driver Cleaner Pro and such to get rid of the old drivers? I used to get the same slowdowns with tool tips and such due to old drivers still clinging around.

Unfortunately, if you're using ATI Tool it has to disable the service that allows you to switch between 2D and 3D clocks. Usually it will default to the slower 2D clocks.

Strange though how you still have an unknown device. If you installed the WDM and display drivers you should have pretty much everything installed. Then again, I usually just download and use the full Catalyst suite anyways just to avoid these little nuisances. ;) At the very least though it's working for the most part for ya! Finally, enjoy some gaming! :)
 
Yeah, it was all automated really, didn't have to do anything at all other than add the groups. Could it possibly be a webcam driver causing it? Cause i have a rather overly cheapo webcam (kinamax) that i got from a friend and i installed a bunch of drivers for it, and not all of them are gone most likely.
