Sapphire X1800XT Problems Need Help

Ok I have had my Sapphire X1800XT for several years, the past couple of months I have started seeing tearing, artifacts, flashes, and sparkles at random while playing WoW and other games. On occasion the whole system freezes (while in games only), on other occasions the game freezes and I can alt tab out; in the systray of windows there is a message that the video card has stopped responding. Other times, the game screen freezes, after a second goes black, and I can hear the fans on the computer cut off and spin back up then the video starts working again. This card was RMA'ed about 6 months ago because it had died. System would boot but card wouldnt give any graphics.

I believe the issue is either the video card or power supply, looking for suggestions on which, or aother things to check before replacing hardware.

Its possibly power suppy but I suspect damage to the card due to inadequate cooling (or possibly excess overclocking?).
I presume you have made sure the heatsink is free from dust and you have decent case air flow?

The heatsink paste on the GPU core may have gone off.
Its worth changing it just in case.

Be sure that the voltage regulators (on the card) arent getting too hot as this will cause bad issues.
I've had a fan blowing on mine almost since I bought it as they can get very hot and caused crashes.

With any luck, your card might be ok.
If you are unlucky, the damage caused by overheating has already compromised the maximum speed your card will run at.
In this case, clocking it lower (to generate less heat) might get more life from it.
 
I had problems with mine as well, but took the stock cooler off, installed a Zalman cooler with a few heat sincs and its much better. i dont think the stock cooler design is very good on these cards. But every once in awhile I get the exact same issue as you, game freezes and a few seconds later comes back and I will get a GPU reset error. I pressume its my power supply, its a cheapo 450w powersupply that I really need to upgrade.
