Not that there's anything wrong with that! Just wondering if all their cards are made in China, and if not, which factories are considered the best? Just got a 9600 for a "Mom" box from Newegg and it's from China. Plus, there's no fan on the GPU! I thought all video cards pretty much use active cooling these days.

no fan does seem odd. Although the 9600xt's are supposed to run pretty cool anyway due to the low-k process they're made with. You can get a 9600xt ultimate or 9600ultimate from sapphire and it uses a heatpipe/heatsink solution (like the zalman or giant II) with no fan. So with the right hs you can get away without using a fan on a 9600. If it's a pidly ass heatsink, then I'd be a little concerned.

almost all 9600's have no fan, because they don't need it.

The sink looks pretty good, fairly substantial. Has ATi plastered on it, so it must work since they're the OEM supplier for ATi.

I never looked at a plain 9600np, only looked at pros and xt's.

But I suppose it's true though, the 9600pro/xt don't put out much heat (unless you overclock and vmod it) to begin with, and the np has a lot lower clock speed.

I wouldn't worry about it especially if it has ATI on it and doesn't get too hot to touch. And if it's not used for any gaming...that's all the more reason not to worry.

The entire 9600 line runs very cool and consumes little electrical power, at least in comparison to the other cards out there.

I think most 9600 cards are just cooled with passive heatsinks. Active fan cooling is just not necessary. The external power connector is not necessary either, where as even on a FX5200 an external power connector is sometimes found.

My old BBA 9600XT had a fan on it. Was able to overclock fairly high with no artifacting.
