The difference being that Intel doesn't have competition that's currently kicking it's ass that they need to catch up to.

Once again everyone is hyped on something that is nothing more than a die shrink with a potential... and my God that is a far fetched potential, given intel's history, the GPU might be an inch better than the craptastic HD3000.

Intel has said that Ivy's GPU will be significantly better than the HD3000,and the HD3000 is better than craptastic. the HD3000 provides enough power to do quite a lot including gaming.

I like Sandy Bridge, but I could like it more if it was clocked slightly higher and had a lower TDP, too boot.

I'll just add this to the conversation since virtually no one here owns a socket 2011 except a few of us.

My 3930K idles at 27c +/- a few based on ambient. It idles at 0.83-0.86vcore and downclocks to 1200mhz using speedstep.

My 2500K idles at the same temp, but idles at 1.16'ish volts and downclocks to 1600mhz.

The SDB-E are superior yes! Sorry you are confused into following the masses who do NOT own these processors by buying the hype that these are burning 530watts of energy at idle and running at 1275 deg Kelvin.

My 3930K idles at 27c +/- a few based on ambient. It idles at 0.83-0.86vcore and downclocks to 1200mhz using speedstep.

My 2500K idles at the same temp, but idles at 1.16'ish volts and downclocks to 1600mhz.

The 3900s do look nice, but I think that many of us really want Ivy Bridge. If Windows 8 weren't coming out next year I'd be tempted but I really want to only upgrade once and I'd like to wait for Windows 8 certified stuff though I'm sure that SB-E systems will have little trouble going to Windows 8.

My main interest in the 3960X come from nVidia claims of a 20% boost in 3 and 4 way SLI performance using current gen 500 series cards.

But unfortunately I'm not rich and I have to pick my battles and I'm not really feeling the need for more performance right now and I'd like hardware with Windows 8 in mind before I upgrade, I probably won't buy any more hardware until then.

I'm sure if all of us were rich enough, we would be using 3960x systems. Or the SR-3 system once it comes out. With quad SLI GTX 580 3gb cards. But, we can't. And some of us apparently feel the need to convince themselves that the higher end systems aren't any better than our current ones.

How is the performance in games with this cpu compared to your previous cpu? Any difference?

I will certainly let you know. Right now I am reinstalling windows to my other SSD. I didnt like my first configuration. As soon as I get some software loaded ill post some details. I might disable HT and 2 cores and do a heads up comparison between the 2500K and the 3930K in synthetic benches. I will also pull 6 of my 8 ram sticks that way both systems will be dual channel mode.

I might do this extra stuff but definitely the games.

Gaming is right in line if not similar to current sandy, but I'm sure it has it's advantages as they say in encoding.

What can you do? AMD dropped the ball. There is no competition now and Intel can go as slow as it wants and keep doing minor increments to their processor. The only good think I can think of is I don't have to upgrade my motherboard and CPU every two to three years now. I just upgrade my RAM to 6GB to 12GB and plan to sit on this system for awhile. Unless Ivy Bridge blows the socks of what I currently have. I won't be upgrading anytime soon. The only think I have to look forward to is two AMD 7970s or two Nvidia GTX 680s.

To go from a 980x to this is not that wise unless you want to just have the latest.

I wanted to report I am now running my 3930K @ 4.5ghz at 100 base / 45 multi @ 1.38v loaded fully stable and 0.88v idle @ 1200mhz.

Not bad at all.
