With Bulldozer looming just around the corner, I was hoping to see some real-world benchmarks popping up, in anticipation of a new PC I'm gonna build. However, I can't seem to find any reliable benchmarks or tests that havent been either A) proven false or B) using server-oriented architecture (ie. 16-core CPUs, etc).

Does anyone have any input, or possibly any links to help me in my decision? I'd like to build a new box in the next 2-3 weeks, but I'm on the fence as to which route to take.
 
just wait until they get released and you'll find out. there won't be any reviews out because of NDA, and even if one or two reviews got leaked, there's not a large enough pool of people to comment on how well they will do against SB
 
With a release just around the corner, it's sad that no benchmarks would be released. I can't say this with certainty, but that tells me that AMD isnt impressed with their own performance. This pisses me off because I want to build this system, but the CPU defines itself, the mobo, and perhaps RAM as well, when it comes to putting together this system.
 
Il tell you that I love amd... Always built theyre systems... Wether I was a fanboy or not.. Who knows.... Ever since conroe I havent built anything but intel because I have no budget limitations... For the most part (i can save.money to buy what I really want) with that said why are u pissed that u cant build ur system? If u want the top of the line just build the intel system... Amd is currently there for the people with a low budget.. Some people love them enough... My womans system this summer will likely be amd based... however if bd turns out to be amazing... She will gladly take my i7 setup while I build myself a new amd box.... Highly doubtful.. But ya....


I guess what im trying to say is build now.based on ur budget... Never wait...
 
Well, my budget is about 1k (monitor not needed), so it allows me to choose between the two architectures. Seeing as I'm building a system for playing games like BF3 in November, I'd like to get the most bang out of it possible. However, I'm building this early so I can play other games like LA Noire and connect to my HDTV, so I'd rather have it sooner, but can manage to wait If I need to. I've been on a laptop for years, and now my desktop is pretty much a paperweight (athlon 3200 @ 2.4ghz , radeon 9800), so it's TIME TO BUILD.

I'm getting the build-itis :p

If I choose not to wait for Bulldozer, I'm thinking of going with the new MSI Z68 GD80 mobo and a i7-2600k w/8gb ram. That's expensive, but I can afford it, and can push it on air to nearly 5ghz, or so tests have shown. Thing I can't figure out is whether the new Z68 mobo is worth the xtra 50-70 bucks over the P67. A new guru3d review came out showing promising results, but it's the first of many new boards to come.
 
Not really I would go p67.. Since ur gonna be using discrete gpu... In ur 1k im guessing ur not gonna get a ssd.... The real.diff in the boards thats gonna matter is are u gonna save some cash after the initial build? If so how much? If u can save a little after ur initial build for a ssd id go with z68 and ssd caching.. If ur gonna save a bit more id go with p67 and a then get a nice ssd to boot windows and most used programs/games...

Although the z68 will also obviously allow u to do the same... But if u cant save much for a ssd then def take advantage of the caching... Although to be honest I havent heard anything about how that is workibg out for people
 
That's exactly what I was thinking in regards to SSD and z68. I'm gonna go without a SSD for a while, then see how prices are near the end of the year. I'm planning on sticking with a 1tb Spinpoint SATA drive til then.

And yeah, as far as performance goes, the reviews I've seen are somewhat inconclusive, and there's not much data regarding the feature as of yet.
 
By the way, how do you like that Phantom case? I just stumbled across that last night, and it looks very well-built. How's the noise, and do the fan controls seem rugged and able to stand the test of time?

Unless you are upgrading from something pretty old, the component that will give you the biggest performance boost is an ssd. Buying anything new without having budgeted for an ssd is a mistake.

I am though. My old computer is an Athlon XP barton-core 2500+ (2.2) overclocked to 2.4 (3200+) with 1gb of ram and a Radeon 9800 Pro 128mb card. I believe I built it in 04 or 05.
 
I love love love the phantom.. The fan controlls feel rubberized or whatnot.. They have some flex to themm problably one of the best built parts on the case... I doubt they will ever break.. Nzxt's quality on this case is amazing.. Even the front plastic isnt normal... Almost seems indestructable.. Ive hit it with chairlegs and everything and not a scratch on it.. Not the quietest of all cases.. Well atleast not with the fans cranked up
 
I have the Phantom, it's a pretty nice case - well built. I'm not typically into flashy case, but I really dig the aesthetics of this one. I run all the fans on low, and while being reasonably quiet, I do wish it were quieter. However, it's definitely a noise level I can live with (and I'm fairly picky about the amount of noise my stuff makes), and the cooling capacity is pretty respectable even with all the fans on low.

Personally, with a budget of 1K, I'd opt for a 2500k and P67A-GD65, and use the savings for a 128GB SSD. These things really rock. They really are the bee's knees.

I have a black one and its easily the best case I've ever bought. Cable management is phenomenal with this case (you can see how clean mine was http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1610040 ). Its very quite and the fan controller works well. I may upgrade it just to get them on auto control by temp feedback. The only two minor issues I've had is the hard drive mounts are intuitive, but are lacking a bit...still usable however, and my power button doesnt work but I haven't spent enough time to diagnose the problem. I'm guess its either a lose connection or the power/reset buttons got labeled backwards because the reset fires it up.
