ok i got a upgrade itch for this spring so i decided to try a SB setup. i bought following used parts on onilne forum all of which had decent heatware etc.

2600k
8gb corsair xms cl9 2000mhz
asus MIVE board

i had previously x58 setup (i7-950, evga board and 12gb hyperx ram) running with ocz ssd and seagate hdd.

ok when i fired up the SB setup, it says, "no hard disk". i do nothing, and it trys to go to windows but as soon as windows logo on black back ground screen goes away, couputer goes BSOD. it does boot to bios just fine and i can do all the UFI settings there but it just won't boot.

on bios, it does list all the hard drive. i even tried to connect one SATA cable to my main ssd on SATA III and SATA II each but still no luck and shuts off with BSOD.

i tried loading default, still doesn't work. and after few hours of run around, i gave up for now and switch back to my good old x58 setup. everything works just the way it was.

now i don't know if it's the board that's faulty or the cpu or both. can somebody shed some lights on this?

i didn't even try to overclock or anything. it just doesn't boot period... this is very frustrating especially lack of computer skills...

Try reducing the ram frequency to 1333 MHz. Remember that any ram frequency over 1333 is overclocking the ram controller on the CPU and is not supported by Intel.

If it works at 1333. Then try using the XMP profile.

its a long shot but if you google seach the last 4-5 digits of you bsod error it will give you a round about idea on whats causing the bsod error i had an odd error on and old comp and the bsod code ended up being a problem with my onboard audio conflicting with my usb headset disabled the audio and everything worked great.

2 questions stand out to me at first glance

1st, is the motherboard one of the revised b3 stepping, or an older (recalled) version. Specifically of note here, if you weren't aware, is that the recalled versions had bad sata ports, which sounds conspicuous given your problems. Try testing various sata ports on the board as well as the sata cable to see if you get any change.

2nd, it sounds like you did a clean install of windows, but I'm not sure from what you've said. If you're trying to boot up a previous installation, that could be causing issues.

All that being said, I did help a friend build a similar setup on a normal Asus p8p67 a few weeks ago, and he had similar issues with getting the sata drive to be recognized consistently, even on a supposed b3 fixed board. We ended up exchanging the board at micro center and alls well now. Granted if it comes to that in your situation you may have to rely on Asus rma. However, if your board is not a b3 stepping, I believe Asus will just swap it out for the new ones, but I'm not sure on the particulars.

from what i gathering from all other forums, it looks like i need to do fresh installation of windows so i'll try that. so when you switch platform from x58 to p67, you have to do fresh install of windows or get new hard drive to go with? this is new to me. i thought i just swap out the mobo/cpu/ram and all will go well but guess not.

and as long as ram timing/frequency goes, yes everything on bios were default/auto which means it was actually at 1066 so no overclocking issue here.

i don't think it's B2 board. the previous owner mentioned he just got it back from asus from rma and didn't tough it and it certainly looked like so too.

It's not absolutely necessary to do a clean windows 7 install in all instances, but it could be the source of your problems.

Also, the fact that you got this used/non-retail is the main reason I was asking whether it was in fact B3 stepping. I'm not sure if there's an easy way to check the stepping off hand - did you get the board in box, or bare?

Go into the BIOS and switch the ATA mode from IDE to AHCI. If it is already on AHCI, switch it to IDE.

Hm, that very well could be it, esp. If the other ssd drive had never been used on ahci.

just spoke to the seller of this board and he confirmed that it is B3 board and tested in working order prior to shipment. he is reputable seller on heatware so i don't think steppping is the problem.

will try this before i do fresh installation of windows. thank you so much.

just out of curiosiry, what is ahci?

thank you all for the help btw...
