What type of sand paper should I use to sand Plexi so it looks smoky? I'd like the plexi to light up with CCFL's but it be hard, if not impossible, to see through.
 
Well no grit paper is going to give you that look it has to be etch'd sorry.
 
I have no problem etching it, just thought sanding it would be just as good, if not better (more even). Thanks for the info.
 
Use 1000 grit. If that doesnt work go to a 600. I did this once when i made buttons out of plexi and i think i used 1000.
 
Throw it in a soda cabinet filled with fine soda...couple of shots and it's done...Done that before on a college project for some lab equipment I helped to build.

i think he meant sand cabinet....aka..sand blaster :rolleyes:

unless theres something actually called a soda cabinet?

lmao, I should have known.. It's just he made the same mistake (soda) twice in a row, which made me think he was.. serious.. My dad has a sand blaster, I'll give that a try :D

Edit: is there a way to make a small area (maybe letters where you can't sand blast it? IE: Can I use tape (electircal? Duct?) to draw letters out, and then sand blast it?

I have a sand blaster but i was going for somthing easy for any one to do..
 
I've done this before, with great success. I used a sanding block, and 1500+ grit sandpaper. And just wet sand it the plexi you want frosted. make sure you use a bucket full of water with a drop of dish soap in it, it Will help keep the paper from getting build up on it.

Also something that works well with glass windows (and should with plexi never tried it) is to use a flat clearcoat (like from Testers) and use very light coats, when the clearcoat dries it will have a frosted look.

I've tried sandpaper and the results were pretty good. Even a low-grit paper like 600 will look okay from a couple feet away. Like the others said in here just try to get high-grit paper around 1000 grit, and you should have a nice effect. Even a single LED will light up a piece of acrylic like this. Good luck on it, and take lots of pics for us to see the results :0)

Will do, but this won't happen for at least a couple weeks, all my free time has been spent fixing my Yamaha 175 ATC (fast bitch).
 
I hate to revive an old thread but :p , Sanding plexi/lexan is the most difficult way to achieve that effect. Just use Frosted glass clear coat. It's easy and works great. I used it on my side window with a stencil to make a window graphic and the cathode light grabs it and illuminates it very well.

I'll take some pics and post it once our Canon gets replaced by factory service. The shutter stopped working and threw an error code at me. But hey ,they are gonna replace it with a newer model.

I use the "frosted glass" clear coat. I forget the company, but it's the one that has the bright blue can with pictures of chairs, bicycles, and furniture on the front. I think it's Duplicolor, but almost every company makes this type of clearcoat now and they all work pretty much the same from my experience.

Yes, you can. I used a single layer of clear packing tape which I cut with an exacto knife. I think electrical tape might come up from the surface easier, and duct tape, due to the threads in it, has little nooks and crannies on the edges where sand can get it and give you a less fine line on the edge.
