I am looking at getting one sata hard drive now (80 or 160) and then another at a later date for raid-0.

Between the Samsung and the Hitachi, what do you recommend? The hitachis have the best access time from what I have read. But I have also seen good things about the samsungs.

As far as noise and performance, convince me one way or the other.

Thanks

Also, are there any "True Sata" drives available... these use parallel to sata chips.

The Samsung is the quietest 7200 RPM drive currently available. The Hitachi is the fastest 7200 RPM drive currently available. Both are fast. Both are quiet. Take your pick.

Speed is king!!! I probably wont be able to hear it over the tornado on low anyway. Thank god for fan controllers, eh?

What of this "meowing" the Hitachis do?

May be a stupid question... Since I've not kept up with IBM / Hitachi since the IBM unit was sold, I'm wondering if the Hitachis are really just deathstars in disguise.. hope not..

Samsung Drive all the way, i havent had a problem with them all the way back to my first 1 gig+ drive. :) Memories.... as for ibm/hitichi....nuff said.

I just build a machine for someone with a hitachi 160gb sata drive. I didn't hear the meow, or anything at all for that matter. I was very impressed.

It is different drive to drive... but if you get a "meower" you cant RMA it because it is "normal".

I wonder if the meow has anything to do with running at high temperature?

The case I put it in has excellent airflow, so the drive basically never had (and never will) have a chance to get hot.

It happens because they got around the design flaw by having the head move itself periodically. That is what makes the noise.
