Recently bought an evo 840 500gb and in order to enable over provisioning, magician is asking to turn on disk defragmenter...

I was always told that ssd do not need it and that also may shorten its life... so what's up with this? will i be safe with it turned on?

The recent versions of Magician do not have any defrag-specific settings under OS Optimization that I could find (old versions did), but it should leave the default Windows settings intact (by keeping the defrag schedule for SSDs disabled, while still leaving it active for any mechanical drives in the system).

If you've previously disabled the Windows disk defragmenter service or any schedules, I'd let Magician turn it back on, and then afterwards (maybe the day after the scheduler is set to run), open the Windows defrag tool to verify that your SSD still shows "never run" (mine is set to "all drives" plus a mechanical drive, but has never been run on the SSD).

Or, if you only have solid state drives installed in your system, then I suppose you could just leave the defragmenter disabled, if you're willing to stick with the default 840 Evo over-provisioning.

Yes, i only have SSD on my system, thats why i want to have it disabled.
So if i disable disk defrag after setting over provisioning, will it work fine?

Because once it's off, magician says "service disk defragmenter is disabled. enable it and try again", i guess this just means i have to turn it one again in case i want to relocate the amount of over provisioning space?

It usually doesnt matter as Windows should already know its an SSD and will trigger trim instead of defrag.
