Samsung Laptop HDD

ok my portable samsung hdd has failed.
it does spin up fine but the read heads move in..pause for a few seconds, then move out again.
i really reallly really need the data on this.
has anyone ever swapped the platters from 2 identical drives to get data off a HDD before?
or does anyone know if there is any kind of fix for this read head problem?

one thing you could try is to buy a 3.5" to 2.5" ide adapter. just put the laptop drive on there with your normal computer and get the data off...hopefully

ok discovered something wierd

if i put the drive ion my caddy it won't work
if i ttry to clone it using a Logicube Sonix, it won't work
i put it directly into a laptop and booted mini Win98...and guess what..i can see the data on the drive.

so does anyone know how i can copy the data off a drive thats installed in a laptop off to a USB drive?

aren't you the smart one

portable harddrive.....no OS on it.
It will only even begin to read when its in a notebook
do you see my quandry.

o and i've found that the ONLY boot cd that will allow me to read the disk is Mini98
which is wierd

i've managed to start taking data offit using a 2gb Corsair mem stick...it'll be a slow process

If you can boot Mini Win98, and you can use a 2GB mem stick, why the fcuk can't you plug in an external USB drive like I said? I'm not trying to be a smartass, but either you're leaving details out or you're just plain stupid.

the only thing the version of Mini98 i have will recognise is a mem stick
it won't recognise an external hdd at all.
