so today i received a samsung 2 tb 5400 rmp drive (hd204ui). i put it in my computer and started transferring data to it. after a few minutes the write speed stabilizes around 13 mb/s. i am transferring large backup images, so it is not a lot of little files. i have updated the firmware on it, but it is still way too slow. i'm running win7. i knew it was going to be a slower drive because it is 5400 rpm, but this is a little too slow. it would take me about 21 hours to transfer 1 tb.

did i get a bad drive? is there anything i can do?

ok for some reason it stopped letting me post on sheepgoat. i was suprised that it let me log in on that one anyway, it was my old account that had blocked me out years ago.

crystaldiskinfo says disk not found. so i hooked the drive up to usb and it still said the same thing.

i got 21 hours because that is what windows 7 said the estimated time would be to transfer it, then i did the math and its about right

I have some of those drives here at work so I ran one for you on Crystal Disk Mark. Windows 7 64, AHCI mode... I get a steady 127 read and 124 write on sequential. Just for sake of comparison once you get the drive going (hopefully).

Bench your internal disk not the hd204ui.
Then bench the samsung using CrystalDiskinfo and run HD Tune against it.
Btw are you copying over the lan or from one partition to another?

I have the same drives and my own transfer are around 90MB/s over the lan.
Those speeds are 10/100 speeds.

ok sorry for my delayed response. i had to reinstall windows on my other computer to test it on another system. on my other computer i get great read and write speeds, i don't remember what they were but i was more than pleased esp for a 5400 rpm drive. so i'm guessing it has something to do with how i have my main computer set up. i'm using the onboard raid on my motherboard so i suspect it has something to do with that. this weekend i'm going to turn the raid off and reinstall windows, then see if that fixes my problem.
