Does anyone know if samsung makes the 970P in black? I have heard they do, but I can't find it anywhere online.

Thanks

I think they make it in white, silver, black, and red. I have only seen white and silver listed

As if I don't already want one of those monitors badly already... black would be so sexy.

Its a nice monitor, it kinda sux if you play any kind of game because it is going to blur a little bit. Mine was defective so i sent it back but it did work for three hours or so before the green artifacties invaded my screen.

Hmm, my 970P shows no blurring in games

Anyway, it seems in both USA and Europe the black version is a phantom version.

I stayed away from the 970p, which I originally liked, mainly because of RegisteredToPost's comments on it. Knot3D, what games are you playing on this monitor? What are your thoughts?

I got a 970P, and it is pretty good for games. Considering that I came from the die hard CRT world (I still use a Diamondtron and the FW900 daily), and have had and used the Hyundai L90D+, Viewsonic VP191B, Dell 2001FP, 2005FPW and 2405FPW, I would have to say overall, this monitor was one of the best LCD for gaming in terms of response time. I do notice a little blurring and the haze effect that the overdrive puts out but it shouldn't make you play much poorly over a CRT. Haven't tried the fastest LCDs such as the VX922, but I don't like sacrificing color quality for response time and viewing angles. But as long as LCDs dont' have true sub 1 ms response times, they are all going to blur to an extent relative to a CRT.

MZ6, compared to the 2005FPW does the 970P also have better color reproduction and less color issues (banding, etc)? I'm still trying to decide between these two.

Before I had a 19" Hyundai DeluxScan P990 CRT. This Samsung 970P on DVI lives up to the CRT, and then some.

This was a very conscious decision becuz I also work in photoshop, cinema4D and 3DsMax.
I didn't wanna sacrifice color and contrast when moving from crt to lcd ; the trade off is virtually zero and it has the added advantage of sharper IQ.

I don't play hyper fast fps games though ; mainly games with strong lighting like SplinterCell Chaos Theory and Half Life 2 for which the 970P is sublime ; no ghosting in these games.

So, ppl who want a super fast screen, 1 or 2 ms, fit for high speed fps games and widescreen dvd viewing and don't care too much for 970P's color and IQ advantage, I suggest something else than the 970P.

I don't have the 2005FPW anymore but from what I remember, the 2005FPW had the best overall color reproduction of any LCD monitor that I had. The whole picture on the 2005FPW seems "richer" akin to a CRT, although the blacks were deeper and the colors might have been a bit more accurate on the 970P (I didn't calibrate them). The 2005FPW had the least banding.

The 2005FPW also had the best viewing angles. Whereas a TN screen turn black immediately, the S-PVA panel like the 970P turns white. The 2005FPW never changed no matter what angled you look.

For outside of gaming, the 2005FPW is a better monitor unless you need deep blacks.

Ah, so the 2005FPW may not be as good for viewing DVDs then? And I don't game very often-I'm not a big FPS guy anyway.
I mainly use my monitor for Painter and Photoshop work (not professional though), general computer stuff like browsing, and the occasional movie and game. Looking at this, it seems like the 2005FPW would be the better suited monitor, but the backlight issue for the 2005fpw balances the two LCDs out a bit, I think. That is my dilemma.

That's basically it. TN and overdrive PVA monitors do have a bit of "speckles" in movies unless you sit far enough back. S-IPS monitors like the 2005FPW do not. S-IPS monitors thus far do not have very deep blacks, so if you watch dark movies or watch a lot of movies in the dark, the grayish bleed through might be a bit bothersome. Due to the current LCD technology, all LCD monitor have some sort bleeding problems with varying degrees with the blacks due to the flourescent lights they use as backlight. This won't go away until LED LCDs come out or other technologies such as SED.

For surfing the web, hands down the 2005FPW will be better because of the higher resolution. I am used to nothing but 1600x1200 or larger and 1280x1024 seems too small.

Black levels on the 970p were awesome. They looked better than the trinitron crt i'm using right now. I dont like how the picture 'changes' as you adjust your viewing angle, however. It's still the same picture but it changes a tiny bit. Hard to explain. I'd say the blurring was minor, but enough to make me not want to keep it. I think lcd is a gimmick technology, but you've got to start somewhere! (in the world of flat displays). I thought the 970p was nice, and would have learned to love it had it not been defective, but i'm glad i sent it back. I want a display to be something i fall in love with looking at. Kind of like a wife, but with less rejection factor :D. Also with a one time price tag. Now where did i put my fleshlight?
moving on!
I've always used crts, and decided to plunge into owning an lcd. Right now, i'm glad i dont have the 970p. It was a decent monitor, looked awesome, great color but i just hated how it blurred. If you adjust your mouse sensitivity, you are going to notice it. Even playing hl2 single player. When you get to the scientist and alyx, in that thing that rotates very quickly, it blurrs. I didnt want to pay $500 for that...I guess the switch from a trinitron to an lcd display is a bad choice to make! Definately feels like you're dragging your videocard through mud(lcd), apposed to it smoothly gliding over blacktop(crt). I dont understand how some people dont see blurring. I dont beleive for one second that any lcd panel will have complete fluid motion. Maybe i picked the wrong model, but with a technology that is shrouded in such mis-leading specifications and problems (ms G2G, inaccurate specs, 6bit 8bit, deadpixls, etc) it's surprising that its selling so well. Oh yea, you cant buy a good *new* crt anymore. I think lcd's are worthless, unless you like looking at webpage text. My two cents anyhow. Also, does anyone know why in the fuck Apple cinema displays are so damn expensive? The specs dont really show anything spectacular. mediocre contrast. mediocre brightness. (what i interpreted anyway). I was just curious. I did see one in action and it looked spectacular though. At circuit city or someplace. compusa maybe.

Well whatever, i hope you guys like what i wrote about lcd's..

^lol. You're ranting. For anything slightly better than the 970P he's gonna pay ALOT more than the 970P costs. You might wanna stay with CRT's though.

Within the realistic context of the thread, the TS has only a handfull of choices :

Samsung 970P, LG L1980Qplus and ViewSonic VP930.maybe some others.

For movies, pva lcds are sufficient because of its blacks, rare fast motion. For games, only the 6 bit 4ms TN panels are decent. LCD's problem right now is quality control. People are buying them like hotcakes even though they bleed, buzz, whine, have input issues, irregular gradient issues, motion issues, poweron issues. As such, the only models that don't exhibit this crap are twice as expensive, even though the problems seem easily fixable with revision. CRT was a tech that would just plain fucking work. It was a lot less of a lottery. When LED comes to lcds, I expect fewer issues because of the change to a grid of low heat light. Unfortunately, this tech is seemingly taking forever to come to the market.
