Hi guys. I'm trying to decide between a Samsung 731BF and 740BX LCD for my younger brother. He plays games a lot, a mix between MMO and FPS, as well as watches movies and browses the internet. While he's not hardcore FPS or anything, I'd still like to get him the best monitor possible for his gaming.

The 731BF is Samsung's new 2ms panel with a contrast ratio of 700:1 but also listed as 2000:1 (dynamic). Like, the bestbuy site has it listed as 2000:1 and the LCD's frame also says 2000:1 in the upper right corner.

Interesting.

The 740BX is also a 17" panel, but has a listed response time of 5ms and 1000:1 contrast ratio. The viewing angles of both LCDs are similar (160 degrees for the 731 vs 170 for the 740 - which are pretty close and hardly noticeable in my book.) Also, I do believe that both panels are TN.

So in the end they're very similar, but the question is which do I want to get?

The 731 looks VERY attractive with its 2ms and *possible* 2000:1 contrast ratio. However, supposing that is a hoax perhaps the 740 with 5ms and 1000:1 contrast is better? I'm not sure. What do you guys think?

Right now I'm leaning towards the 731 as I have a 204B myself with a 5ms 800:1 contrast and if, at worst, the 731 is 700:1 I would expect it to be barely worse than mine --- which I think is good enough.

Anyways, I'd appreciate your thoughts.

Thanks

I have the 731bf for about three weeks. Beautiful Crisp Picture. Video & Games look great. No Ghosting at all. This picture looks better than some TV's I have seen. Awesome upgrade from my Dyna flat 997. I would definitely recommend this monitor if you are into video & gaming. If you just need for web browsing & general office work it is over kill.
