My employer is offering to fund the purchase of a new display and video card since I do a lot of work from home. I'm restricted, however, to Best Buy's product selection. Took a look at lunch today at the 40" Samung 4k JU6500 and the 28" U28E590D 4k monitors with Freesync. If I go with the 40", I'm going to be looking at an EVGA GTX970, which is the Best Buy only SKU with the older ACX cooler. With the 28", I can get an XFX R9 390X 8G card. With either of these displays, I'd like to be able connect my 2015 13" Retina MacBook Pro and a PS4.

Any thoughts?

If it were me and it were work buying it, I'd go for the 40". You'll be able to fit more terminals with more code on the screen and still have a high enough DPI that fonts should look sharp. The 970 is still a pretty nice card and you should be set for light 4k gaming or heavier 1080p gaming (that's probably not why they are buying if you though I'm guessing?) :)
 
I'd definitely go for the 40" or something in that area. DPI with 4k@40" will be the same as a 27" 1440p monitor which is just about right. Text is small but still perfectly legible at a distance of ~3ft. I've got one at home and use two at work and they're great for productivity, also excellent for gaming if you've got the hardware to push 60fps at 4k. You can run more demanding games in a 1440p window and it will be the same size as a 27" monitor while still keeping the same sharp DPI.

DPI on a 28" 4k monitor will be so high that you will probably end up using scaling which makes the extra desktop real estate you get with 4k worthless.

Just ran home after work while I consider this. Pulled the tape measure out just to get an idea how much bigger a 40" display is than my current 27" display. Holy shitballs, it's going to be huge. Really the only thing bugging me is the inferior EVGA GTX 970 they sell at Best Buy. But I can step up to a 980ti in a few months, I guess. I've got a look RPGs to play anyway. It does piss me off that AMD didn't put HDMI 2.0 on their latest cards. Absurd.
 
4K is kind of worthless at 28," and 4K TN panels are even more worthless. The Samsung TV's use LED PWM Dimming which ruins motion clarity and makes some people suffer from health issues like headaches and/or eyestrain. Sony's 43" X830C is sold by Best Buy, does not use PWM and supports 4:4:4 which makes it a superior choice.

I came across a recent thread where you and Nikyo were discussing how IPS glow compares to VA gamma shift in near field use of large screens and how RTINGS motion test rating methodology doesn't really account for PWM motion artifacts. If so, I find it strange that the Sony has gotten so little attention here compared to the Samsung, especially since it's one of the few that can do 1080p120.

Yes, but only because it's the only tested 40-43" named brand 4K TV I'm aware of which is PWM free and supports 4:4:4. VA contrast shift (white glow) can indeed be much worse than AHVA/IPS/PLS glow depending on the panel and viewing distance.
 
Snagged the 40" and the 970. PWM has never bothered me in the past. If I notice it with this display, hopefully it will be within my 14 day return window.
 
Can't comment on PWM, but I can say that after living with the 28" samsung you probably made the right choice. 4k @ 28" might not be useless, after all it's still great looking when gaming, but for productivity I miss having two 1440p monitors. As the prices have dropped it's gotten harder and harder to not buy a 40" tv to use as a monitor.

I notice that you've emphasize tested. Are there other displays that might be superior that haven't been tested? I'm aware of the Wasabi/Crossover displays that are similar, but even those can't do 1080p120 and have the brand/warranty disadvantage you mention. I've consider myself lucky with the 1.5 years I've gotten out of the Seiki 39 so far, with the horror stories I've read.
 
PWM dimming never bothered me until I got a flicker free monitor. It does make a difference and it is softer on the eyes. Also looks nicer in a sense. 28" for 4k is too small and if you're using 4k as a native resolution why would you want HDMI? Why not use DP or DVI? My vote would probably go to the 390x and a free sync monitor. But I own a 970 and it works great for 1440p, 4k not so much :/ in terms of gaming
