Hey guys,

Last week, I bought a new Samsung 225bw (22" widescreen) and it buzzed -- quite loudly -- every time I turned the brightness below 100%. (the noise started around 80%). OK, I thought, its a defective product... I called Sammy and they sent me a new monitor. I bring the monitor out of the box and it's great for about 2 minutes... then the buzzing comes back! Exact same problem. The only way I can get the damn thing to shut up is by turning the brightness to 100%, but then it is just too bright. This is driving me nuts. Should I just sell the thing on eBay and buy a different brand? Or do you think I just had a couple of duds?

If it's that bad, get your money back or change your monitor with another one if he lets you?

I had a Viewsonic monitor do that. It was pretty annoying, like you said. Happened when I turned down the brightness. You should make sure you don't have anything nearby causing interference with it, like possibly a fan or radio, UPS, battery charger, or something similar. It's kind of odd you would get 2 that started doing that, since this hasn't been an issue with the Samsung monitor as far as I know.

It's also possible that you got 2 duds. It happens. It's probably worth your time to try to RMA again. If the 3rd does the same thing, you should definately look for other sources. Ask the Samsung guy about it.

Well, I got "escalated" to a 2nd level tech, who is sending me a new power cord. I have no idea what a new power cord would do, but I suppose it is worth a try. I have also tried moving the monitor to a differrent room and hooking it up to just my laptop, but it is doing the same thing.

Sigh. THanks for the help!

Wow, the new power cable worked... no more buzzing! just thought y'all might want to know.

Interesting...

I have a similar problem. Except mine only occurs sometimes.. Usually after I press a few buttons. I can make the sound go away by squeezing the panel rim around the buttons. Weird!

usually this kind of buzzing comes from power supplies, namely, from the transformer in the power supply. Many times, if the core is not unitized, that is it's made of E type sheet, ie. mu-metal, ALNICO or MAGNICO, or C sheet type alloy with oriented particles, etc., and the sheets are not very well compressed against each other, these sheets enter into vibration whose frequency is in phase with the frequency of the current that circulates in the windings. This causes the "buzz". The phrase used in industry for this phenomenon is: "the transformer sings". The worst consequence of this may be that the trasformer heats up a bit, but nothing more. Any kind of danger as a consequence of this phenomenon can be expected only in case of high currents when thermal hogging may result. For this to happen one needs to pump hundreds of amperes
into the circuit each second, which here is not at all the case.

That's all well and good, but I don't want my monitor "singing" to me.

I understand you can't stand it. Then send it in for exchange or service to change the power supply. IMHO the second choice is not worth it. Exchange it. In any case the buzzing itself is without harm to the monitor.

Sometimes you can also have loose parts or parts that vibrate with the 120V current's frequency. If the frequency resonance of the part is equal to the current's frequency than the part "trembles" at 60 Hz. Some parts are like thin blades and enter vibration easily. Then you have buzz. This is probably what happend with the power cord, namely, its monitor side's blades were resonating. This means flimsy quality because the brass is too thin.

Keep in mind that the above are just maybes because there are quite a few reasons for the buzz which cannot be determined by speculation.
