Hi I'm new here and I have a few questions, I'm looking for either a very good lcd or a very good crt. I use the monitor for some gaming , alot of photo work, some graphic design (I'm not a graphic designer but still need accurate colors) and internet. The monitor that I am interested in is the new Samsung 193p plus. I'd like to know when this monitor will be available for purchase. The monitor that I have now is the Sony sdm-hs94p, but it gives me eye strain, the vertical viewing angles are very fustrating when working with graphics and the color banding also give me problems. Also what causes color banding. I know that some of you guys have the older Samsung 193P, so I also would like to know how the viewing angles are compared to a crt, is it truly 178 degrees? thanks Stu :)
 
The viewing angles are truly 178 degrees when using the standard way of measuring. Of course, that doesn't mean its as good as a CRT but when you sit directly in front of the screen there is no colorshift. Unlike TN panels who's vertical viewing angles are so narrow that even if you sit directly in front of the screen the top of the screen looks darker than the bottom.

TN panels are 18-bit and use dithering to display 16.2m colors. That's why you're experiencing alot of color banding. The panel used in the 193P is a true 24-bit panel so it's a much better choice for graphics work. The only negative side is that it's too slow for gaming and the new 193P+ will supposedly fix that problem too. I have the "old" 193P and I'm planning to go with dual displays when the new one comes out but I'll wait for the reviews before ordering since the specified response time of 8ms is for "grey to grey" and no one yet knows what that means.
 
so do you think that I should get a crt such as a sony or nec/mitsubishi or wait for the new samsung to come out. Anyone know if there any release dates for the samsung yet.
 
I personally would wait for the Samsung but that's just because I like LCDs better than CRTs. I have a Mitsubishi CRT sitting next to the Samsung and I plan to get rid of it and replace it with the new 193P+. No one knows the release date yet but it shouldn't take too long, at least I hope so ;)
 
You should get a CRT if you do a lot of photo/graphic work. LCD color accuracy/reproduction just isn't there yet.

QFT. Sadly, it's going to be tough to find a CRT nowadays. I, myself, have been hunting down the perfect 19" CRT, but they've almost gone the way of the dodo to make way for production of LCDs. Kind of makes me mad too, it's like if this world were to get rid of trucks because everybody buys cars.

To me, the two technologies are different monsters which are better suited for certain tasks. CRTs go for the color critical work (like how trucks are used for heavy transporting) and LCDs go for the all-around work (like how cars are used for common-user everyday transporting). </rant>

Unless you're ready to spring over $2,000 for a down-to-earth-as-color-accurate-as-you'll-get LCD then prepare to sacrifice a bit of productivity or time to make sure that everything prints good. I've used the 193P before (didn't own it) and I can say color accuracy was good. I was able to notice, I believe, the blues were a tad off, but that's ok, CMYK barely has any blues anyway. ;D

I'll research more into this 193P+.
 
I own 193p and i think it is a great LCD. If 193plus will keep all the characteristics of 193p and have 8ms response time then I would get it with closed eyes. :)
