Looking to get my first SSD for my home computer. About 256 or 512Gb. I'll have backups, of course...

Is there some sort of driving argument in favor of the PRO? Or, is the standard 840 good enough for a home user?

The 840 Pro has significantly faster sequential writes, and it should have about three times the endurance of the 840 (3000 erase cycles vs. 1000).

I guess the workloads of most people would not benefit noticeably from the extra performance and endurance of the 840 Pro.
 
If you can swing it I'd go Pro and never look back :D

Use Anand's tool, and be sure to not only compare sequential but also random read and writes those you notice even more, and this latest gen SSD are sometimes a LOT faster than previous ones in random but not huge differences in sequential.
 
Gack! Just ordered a 256Gb 840. If it fails before I think it should, I'll let ya'll know! I'm hoping to see several years (3-4) of good use out of this. It'll be the OS and some prime games. Everything else goes to one of several hard drives. (Yes, frequent OS backups will be made.)

Did you order from Newegg? If so, it might have been a good idea to hold off if you got the Pro. Their prices just skyrocketed for the 256 GB. (It's about $40 more today than it was last week).

newegg prices are strange sometime, their dynamic price adjustment algorithm sometimes raises the price a lot, maybe if inventory is low?

Anyway, the 840 Pro is still available at amazon for about the same price it was last week.

Thanks. You are correct. And, no, I don't consider this any kind of pedantry. Of course, to me, the difference between what the OS shows for available memory space and what the drive manufacturers advertise means that a few gig here or there are meaningless.
