All my friend do that safety removal drive for their ipod. I never did that. I used to beleive the worst it could do is corrupt a file while transfering, but my friend keep telling me how much USEFULL AND IMPORTANT is it. Is it really? I don't really have any argument to say to him...

it really does not matter if there is nothing being read or write at the time u pull the drive out, it was made for the "regular user" that might unplug it while some application was reading or writing in the removable drive

If you open up device manager and view the properties for the USB or removable drive, under the policies tab you can choose

Optimize for Performance

Optimize for Quick Removal

If you select the quick removal button you never have to use the "safely remove hardware" thing from windows XP. This is a per PC setting, the setting does not travel with the drive, so if you set it up on one PC for quick removal, another could still be set for performance.
