While I was planning to change my chipset cooler I saw that the stock cooler was held on my some sort of thermal adhesive and not by the mounting holes. Is it possible to safely remove this stock cooler? If so, how?

is it one of those stupid yellow sticky pads? I used my casino club card and some acetone on a paper towel when I removed that sticky-pad crap off my Geforce 6600GT. really made a difference when I replaced it with thermal grease.

I use a little bit of rubbing alcohol & a qtip to soften dry white goop.

Does it dissolve easily or will there be some of the adhesive left after removal?

It doesn't dissolve it, just makes it so it will come off with more q-tips.

if it's a paraffin wax based melt on pad, like the ones that most of my stock NB coolers have used, you can heat up the heatsink with a hair drier to soften the pad and take off the cooler more easily.

arctic cleaner is the easiest way to deal with the adhesive left stuck on the surfaces. several drops of par one, wait a minute, then the goo just wipes off with a cloth. wipe it down as well as you can, then go at it with part two. wipe off and it's done.

never use q-tips on thermal interface surfaces. they leave behind tonnes of lint, which interferes with performance. paper towels and kleenex do the same. lint free optical wipes are the best thing to use, and around the house paper coffee filters are also lint free.
