Safely Remove Hardware (My sata drive)

Ok so i just installed a nwe 200 gb SATA drive from western digital the other day. It was an OEM drive from newegg so it didn't come with any drivers. So I just used my Data Lifeguard Tools from my 160 GB IDE drive from western digital. I was able to format it correctly and all that jaz. It works fine. But now for some reason i've got that icon that says Safely Remove Hardware, like the icon that i get when i plug in my ipod and it's transfering files, or when I use my USB game pad. When i click on it, it gives me the option to remove my harddrive, now why would i want to do that? But when i actually did try doing that, it said it was unable to stop the proces...... Did i do something wrong with my drivers or what????
 
I've got the same thing sitting in my taskbar and it shows both of my SATA drives (WD raptor and Plextor burner). I just ignore it. As I've only got the single HD at the moment, I've never thought about pulling the drive to see what would happen, as it's the drive with the OS installed. Not sure if you would be able to do a removal if it was just a data drive or not.

Things might be different if you were running a RAID setup and needed to be able to hot-swap drives.
 
The feature allows you to hot-swap the drive while the computer is running, with no ill effect. Now granted, if your currently running OS is on the drive, you don't want to remove that!

Otherwise, it's a nice feature for those who need it. IDE/parallel ATA drives did not have this feature, which is crucial to anyone who has a mission-critical server which requires 24/7 uptime and such. It could also be handy for someone who wanted to transfer the contents of a drive between computers.

Any body with a really important mission critical stuff with be using scsi or fibre but for the average person it can be useful in certian circumstances.

What you, Silent Assasin, run into was the windows will not allow you to stop the drive that currently has the OS or page file on it.
 
Yes, but the Serial ATA development group was thinking ahead to Serial Attached SCSI. The electromechanical interfaces of Serial ATA and Serial Attached SCSI are compatible, and this is where enterprise-level computing comes into the picture. Sometime in the next two or three years, we will see a convergence between desktop and enterprise interfaces, where hopefully all will benefit.

In the meantime, the hot-swapping capability might be useful to a small business, where entry-level near-line storage drives like the Maxtor MaXLine family (which have enterprise level reliability ratings but Serial ATA interfaces) could be put to good use.
 
well no, i understand about all the hot-swaping stuff now, but my sata drive does not have my system files on it. I've got another master IDE drive with all my progs and windows files. The only thing i do have on my SATA drive are games and music. Yet it still won't let me take it out for some reason. But no big deal i don't think i'd ever need to take it out that bad.

But back to my original question, i was just wondering if that icon can go away, but i guess not. It's really not that big of a deal i guess.... Just thought it was kinda odd at first when it allowed me to unplug my HDD while it's running. This is the first SATA drive i've ever had. Didn't know if i screwed up the drivers or something.

Sometimes windows can be really funny about disconnecting detachable devices. I have enough problems with simple USB keychain drives I can see where it would get hung up on your hard drive. I would check the device manager properties for the hard drive and see if there is an option to make it removable or not. You may be able to specify non-removable and get rid of that icon.
