Hi, i have a viewsonic vx922 monitor. the current refresh rate is 60hertz. i was wondering if my monitor would be safe running like around 85 hertz? do you think so or not so?

ToastyX said:Raising the refresh rate on an LCD monitor may not give you the results you're looking for because many LCD monitors will only output 60 frames per second regardless,
The response time has no effect on tearing and has nothing to do with the refresh rate. The refresh rate controls how many frames are sent to the monitor per second, and it's up to the monitor to process those frames. All of the LCD monitors I've used will skip frames if the refresh rate is set higher than 60 Hz. There's really no reason for such a limitation to exist, so I'm sure it's possible to have monitors that don't do that. I don't know if the VX922 does or not.TheRapture said:Not true with the faster TN and overdrive panels. An 8ms "refresh" gives you a theoretical 125fps upper limit before tearing will occur. (1000 divided by 8). Since most LCD's are not true with all colors, 8ms response time, you can still get more than 60fs without tearing.

TheRapture said:Yes it does....if the display can cycle the pixels to the requested color fast enough, you get less ghosting and more frames per second without the display skipping over a frame. My display certainly does not skip frames when I have it set to 75hz (using VGA connection), in fact, in Q3A I cap my fps to 125 in game and get quite smooth, tear free with Vsync OFF. Using DVI of course it is limited to 60hz, but I certainly do see more than 60fps with no tearing.
Maybe you have not tried a faster/newer LCD? (I really don't know, not being mean).
ToastyX said:The response time has nothing to do with how many frames are displayed. Frames are sent from the video card to the monitor at the refresh rate. A higher refresh rate can help reduce visible tearing regardless of whether or not the monitor skips frames, but if it skips frames, motion may seem jittery.
