Safe to power on with no cpu?

Hiya, nother question:

Would it be safe to power on the computer with all components minus the CPU?

Reason is that I have the Arctic Freezer 7 Pro and just got the Scythe Ninja. I wanted to put them side by side to compare the noise and airflow. Of course I dont want the CPU in there without a heatsink on there when I power it on.

Thanks

i doubt it would hurt anything, but it might not turn on without a processor in there. you can always jump the power supply, take a paperclip and connect the green and any black wire on the ATX connector, this will make your power supply turn on without everything else.

Great thanks. Almost done with my comp! Wanted to see if the Ninja would be that much better than my AF7pro. Hopefully I can finally post some results this week.

i dont think its a huge difference between those two but the ninja usualy wins that battle by about 10 degrees give or take.

In the past it wasn't. With more modern motherboards it's probably ok, but I wouldn't recommend it. Why the hell would you bother to try this in the first place?

EDIT: I didn't see the reasoning behind this but there is another way. If you have access to an old AT PSU you can use that. You can also disconnect your PSU and power it on using an ATX power tester that you can buy virtually anywhere. Additionally you can power on a PSU by triggering it using a paper clip.

Just jump the PSU.. think this was mentioned ^

Stick a paperclip in a green wire connection, and stick the other end in a black colored wire connection.

Isnt that a huge difference? Would seem like it to me. But thanks for replies.

Most board manufacturers recommend running without a CPU to help isolate whether or not there's a problem with the board.

I can't understand how this would be bad if they recommend it for troubleshooting

I have never heard that. I've been doing this for 11 years too. The only time I'd ever have considered doing that is with ASUS boards that are equipped with the speech post reporter. Aside from that I wouldn't do it. I've always been able to isolate a problem in a system without having to do that.

I've been building PC's for 22 years and I never heard of that either.

Asus, gigabyte and MSI have all suggested I remove a CPU and listen for any post beeps before accepting the boards (I already determined as dead) back to an RMA...

Although I've never dealt with anything prior to the A64 era, so I can't speak for times before that.

W6FO, friendly reminder... sigining your posts with your initials is against the rules here :)

Turning it on w/o CPU is perfectly fine, plain & simple.

Not my initials, it's my first name. You're the first person to say anything since I've been on [H]ard. *shrug*

I don't see it in the rules here:

The only time I've been warned about anything while I've been on [H]ard is when I TC'd on someone acting like a complete fool in Cases. I was even participating in threads with Kyle earlier today and he didn't say anything.

But whatever, we are close to hijacking, which is against the rules, so I'm not going to comment anymore on this.

Before the A64 era you didn't do that. I've never had to talk to ASUS, Gigabyte, or MSI technical support so I have no idea what they are recommending these days.

I seriously hope you're joking. If not, what the fuck kind of rule is that.

I seem to recall some discussion on the topic and I thought Kyle was against it and even said so. In any case, if it is against the rules, you'll hear about it soon enough.

BTW why would you bother to sign all your posts anyway?

EDIT: It is in the rules. #25 to be exact.

"(25) You are allowed one signature per post. A signature section is supplied for that usage. No one wants to see your name on your posts multiple times as it is annoying."

Hehe, I guess this is a "The more you know" moment then :).

Yeah, I don't like dealing with the technical support drones, but those companies won't cross ship... Since I ship RMA's back from Canada, I need whatever speedups I can manage for my customers.

And, WF, it's #25 on the list of rules. I've seen someone banned for it, so I try to get the word out whenever I can.

Yeah I understand.

As far as rule #25 goes I seem to recall Kyle getting into it with someone once. I could be wrong. Who knows, maybe he doesn't care anymore?

(I wouldn't chance it though.)

That says nothing about my initials. Arcygenical said "friendly reminder... sigining your posts with your initials is against the rules here". So you can see how I misinterpreted what he said. No one has probably cared though because both sigs are so damn small, but fine.. I'll stop signing. No big deal, it was mostly done out of habit.
