I just got my x800 today, and now I'm wondering what is a good safe temperature for it to be overclocked at.

To quote bobmanfoo in the ATI forum:

you should idle ~40C, load ~70C
im getting 34C idle, 51Cload with a modded vga silencer
put on the stock silencer got 37 idle, 62 load

My card sometimes runs above 70 C, as high as 78 C during a torture test on a hot day without airconditioning.

The decision is up to you, but these cards run pretty hot. I wouldn't run my CPU at these temps and it cost less! I settled for a minor overclock and usually run <70 C.
