Safe temp on NF3 Ultra Chipset

I went searching around on these forums and on google but I couldnt find a straight answer.

I have a MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum that I am priming to get ready for an opteron 165 with a 9X multi. Im in the process of testing my FSB, and Im curious what a safe tempurature is for the chipset. I believe the "local temp" is the chipset temp in "Speedfan". Im currently running my HTT bus at 300Mhz, and my "local temp" is running at 39-41C at idle, and 51-52c max under load(so far).. I curious if running 52C on a chipset for a 24 hour period is safe? (I dont plan on running it 24hours under load, but if I had to would it be safe.

Based on your experiences and knowledge what is a "safe temp" on the nforce 3 Ultra chipset?

Also what is a good software application that will monitor (as accuratly as possible) my system temps? (I have MBM5, and Speed Fan). Thanks.

P.S. I've already took off the chipset fan/heatsink, wiped off the junk that was on there, and applied AS5.

On my Neo2-F using speed fan it was Temp3 that was my chipset temp. I verified this by running msi core cell recording temps and immediatly opening speed fan.

I had the same mobo and it died this weekend at 305HTT...no explanation...

If that were the case for me then it looks like my chipset temp doesnt ever move from 27-28c?? What was your average temp?

eh i think chipsets can get up to like 100*c without being damaged
ha

That's not cool  . I ran Prime95 Inplace FFT's for 8 hours with my HTT set to 325mhz, temp was okay and it ran untill I came home and stopped it.

How long were you running your HTT at 305mhz?
Did it fry your cpu and/or memory also?
Any blown caps, or visable burns?
Did you ever change the heatsink compound on the chipset?
Were you in the middle of something when it died?

What board are you going to replace it with?

It was there for a few weeks, stable as a rock...then this weekend i started getting mem error after mem error, spent a few hours tweaking the memory...then finally i restarted once more and it never came back on. The fans spin and everything, but no POST, and the PSU makes a clicking sound like its restarting every 10 seconds or so.

Clearing CMOS did nothing. I have allready replaced the board with an Abit AV8-3rd Eye, all componants work fine.

Im really bummed about my new mobo. Its the second nF3 ive trashed :( I dont get it though, what would cause a mobo to do that? No visible burns or anything

And i didnt even have it for a month :(:(:(

Memory errors in applications/ during normal everyday use? Or memory errors in memtest?

The second? What was the first? What PSU are you running, did your first have similar problems? If youve killed 2 boards.. im lead to believe its most likely a faulty component in your system.. possibly your PSU. You had it less than a month.... what BIOS version were you running? Are you going to RMA it?

EDIT: I just noticed in your sig.... "+ OCZ DDR Booster". Has that been used on both boards? That may be whats killing your boards.. some how.

Sounds like your PSU is to blame. Did you use the same PSU for both boards? You may want to crank out a multimeter and check the voltage on your rails both idle and when the system is under load (once you get it hooked up to a new system).

Even if the voltages are stable on your rails, that doesn't mean the PSU isn't to blame.

It just seems strange for a system to stop working out of nowhere, especially if it is stable as a rock, as you said. I guess I could see it happening if the temps are high for the CPU, chipset, or MOSFETs, but it doesn't sound like that is the case.

Either way, sorry to hear about it :(.

The "Local Temp" on speedfan should be the temp probe on your (nVidia?) graphics card, not the core temp but the ambient temp. Temp3, as ClearH2O states, seems to be the chipset temp (or maybe temp 1. mine are always very similar and I haven't looked into it).

But you're right when you say you notice this temp never goes very high. Mine doesn't either. I noticed that on other boards, like nf4's, the chipset temp is much higher. I wouldn't expect such a drastic difference so I've always left the option open that maybe the chipset temp probe just doesn't give an accurate representation on the neo2.

Well that is good to know. I did notice that the only time the "Local temp" would rise is when the "remote temp" would rise, they would both raise about 10c when I ran video rendering test...

on to another note... does anybody know why clockgen doesnt want to load on my board? can someone send me the correct link for the correct version on clockgen for the 939 K8N Neo 2 Platinum, always much appreciated, thanks.

i gotta tell you dudes, in the order of temps listed from top to bottom i have:

NB: 20
CPU: 45
System: 27
6800 core: 32
6800 ambient: 30
HD0: 33
HD1: 34

and this is with nb fan at 45% which is just below the threshold where it goes silent and stops the annoying whine. this is speedfan 4.23

I am using the PSU in my sig...the DDR booster was only used in the latest one. the memory errors appeared in the form of windows crashes and game crashes.

The other board was a DFI nF3 Ultra-D, which i am going to RMA as soon as i get around to it...I bought the MSI off this forum used, can i still RMA it?

And i will check out the PSU with a multimeter, but isnt the Powerstream a good PSU?

PS with the Abit AV8-3rd Eye im using right now, the PSU works great, never had a problem...and has been in use longer than the other two.

Yes, arguably the best, but that doesnt mean some faulty ones dont make it into the market.

That sucks, sorry to hear that happened, I dont know if you are able to RMA it... I suppose you may be able to if you have the box/upc?
...the DDR booster was only used in the latest one. the memory errors appeared in the form of windows crashes and game crashes.
It's hard to say what is the cause.. but it could very well be that you had 2 different problems.. the "....." being the the problem on the first board, and the "DDR voltage booster" being the problem on the second board.. But really it's hard to guess "what caused my board to die" when your running close to 1Ghz overclock...

I had the DFI for probably a month too. i have been using the AV8 since about june, in place of the other ones.

I have the complete box and UPC for the MSI, i thought you needed a reciept though...ill check it out.

The wierd thing, is the two boards had seperate symptoms. On the DFI, when i powered on, the fans would spin for a split second, then the system shut off. On the MSI it acts like its on, except the PSU clicking thing...wierd. I dont get it, and very frustrated. 2 dead mobos is a financial bummer for a broke student :(

And the worst part is loosing that killer OC!! from 2.75 to 2.2 because of broken AGP lock. That just sucks; but i have to hand it to the via chipset, AGP lock may be broken, but its reliable.

Which reminds me, i need to update my sig.
