ok after 3 days safari is using 340mb. i can quit the program and it release it back. i start it up and uses between 14-30mb. after three days its up to 340mb. (this is after closing all windows but not safari itself.

my friend doesnt have this issue on his 12 inch power book

also after a while seem mail takes up alot of memory. this is a factory load. should i reload my system?

No, don't reinstall. First, check if you're running the latest version of Safari. Then check if the problem occurs for all users on the system. If you are running the latest, and it occurs for all users, install Shiira. It's basically an open source Safari on steroids. The RSS feature isn't as nifty, but it usually behaves a lot like Safari, sans the memory leaks.

Would you all suggest Shiiira even if Safari is working with on issues (runs better than FireFox and IE on PC). Shiira looks like a great browser but I feel I don't need two browsers on my Mac if the the one works wonders, but Shiira is like you said Black Morty Rackham "It's basically an open source Safari on steroids." or looks that way.

i tried shirra and i perfer safari much better.

but why is mail taking up more and more memory?? some times it gets up to 150mb of real memory being used and longer i leave it open more it sucks up. just like safari.

im a noob to macs how do i check to see if i have current version and where do i download it at?

First, what version of the OS are you running?

10.4.<what> ? Go to Apple Menu -> About This Mac

Safari Version? Safari Menu -> About Safari

I'm looking at my activity monitor and Safari that I opened just now is taking 167.35mb of real, 222.72mb of virtual.

Try after using it for three days disconnecting from your internet and see how many pages you can go back. Then press empty cache and look if the amount of memory being used goes down.
That's just for fun, though. Get a different browser, but if you really care about memory leaks don't get firefox.
